Given that I don't have a bedroom, I keep the door closed and locked!

Growing up, my dad insisted the door be closed for safety reasons. If there is a house fire, having the door closed gives one a much better chance of survival because it can delay the fire from spreading into the bedroom giving you more time to get to safety.

there are a lot of people in my house so i keep it closed for privacy and to muffle the noise from the other people.

Closed with the dogs on the other side, otherwise I am woken at 4AM with a wet nose in my face.

I don't have a door to my bedroom, just a gyp board opening. We don't have doors in our loft except for the entry and bathroom. Yes, I get the wet nose in my face often too.

I preferred closed for a long time because I'm a little...er, what's the opposite of claustrophobic? But I'm not that particular now and it often depends on the weather and heating/ac/airflow conditions. Though lately it's always open because my cat likes to stay up later than I do.

We always keep our bedroom door closed to keep the cat (which I'm allergic to) out.

My dad was like Devyn's, and he'd walk through the house at night after everyone else had gone to bed to make sure all the doors were fully closed. Most of the times I had roomates, it was closed. In my last apartment, I liked it open because ... I dunno--it felt like that's how it should be--maybe some weird energy flow. In my condo, I keep it closed because my AC unit is right outside my room, and it's friggin' loud. Plus, my condo's set up with its three rooms all in a row, and I don't like looking out my bedroom door and seeing the front window--a different kind of energy thing than my apartment where the rooms were grouped instead of lined up.

We keep ours open all the time - mainly because the door is like a big sliding wall and who wants to deal with that when you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

I've always slept with mine open so that the current family pet could sleep with me. Now, my cats howl and cry if the door is closed and since the building so old the door doesn't close all the way anyway so why bother?

Living alone I sleep with it open. When I have guests, or live with roomates, I sleep with it closed.

Since we live alone, the door stays open. Back when we had roommates, the door was closed.

It would be interesting to compare the results of the bedroom door survey to the polls of how much clothing one wears to bed!

If we close the door at night, one of our cats litterally rams himself into it until we open it. Door stays closed during the day so the other cat doesn't sleep on our pillows all day.

Yes ... don't you know that old fire safety thing ... you're supposed to sleep with it closed!

emhoop...i used to live with a roommate and her cat would do the same sort of body slamming into my door! made me crazy.

I sleep with it open ... as far as fire safety is concerned, I wouldn't hear the smoke alarm in the hallway if the door were closed ... and the fire escape is in the living room!

I sleep with it open, because somehow that makes me feel like I have control over anything that might happen in the rest of the house at night... Besides, my cats would be really, really sad if I closed the door...

same problem with cats miaowling and scratching and ram into door until open.

I took my bedroom door down: privacy is not an issue since I live alone ( 1 4-legger), no way will it stay closed all night with said 4-legger in the house, the bedroom door opens up to the living room (no hallway) so removing the door opens up the space a little.

We sleep with it closed... at night we turn down the heat in the rest of the apt. and use a small space heater to keep the bedroom at a reasonable temperature (about 67).

Plus, the hamster runs her legs off every night, and she's in the living room.

i leave the door open most of the time, but put something there (currently, a big rock!) so it can only open so much. one of my cats is a hunka chunka burning love, so he likes to push it wide open for his entrances and exits. very dramatic, really. so instead i give him just enough room and he has to live with it. poo.

i'd like to sleep with the door closed, but the cats go apeshit. skinny cat HAS to wake me up at 5am for half-awake scratchies.

We removed our bedroom door since it was always open and just took up precious wall space. My spouse and I live alone, no pets.

My parents had/have a very strict no-closed-doors-in-the-house policy (seriously, if your door's closed for more than 4 minutes, expect a knock and a "What's going on?"); so now, after 18 years of conditioning, I cannot sleep with a closed door. Though this isn't an issue now that I live alone, it was quite an obstacle to overcome when I shared an apartment with a friend.

The no-doors-closed thing works fine for me, since I can't sleep in total darkness (yes, I am afraid of the dark) silence.

So now, if we cross-reference those who sleep with doors open, and those who sleep sans clothing...

when you have cats, you have no choice but to keep it open, they will scratch and meow till you do. plus, i want them to have access to their food/litter during the night in addition to coming in and out.

I keep the door closed since I want to sleep naked in a warm bedroom. I don't want the cold temperature enters in my room neither my flatmates

I'm in the "open for the cat" camp, much to Emily's dismay. She's a total pitch darkness sleeper, so if the door could be closed to achieve maximum darkness it would be. Unfortunately, the cat paws and meows at the door until we open it. He's just gotta hop on my chest and purr in my ear at 6AM, doncha know.
