apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

What Kind of Homebody Are You?

042408culinary-television.jpgIt's 10 pm right now and we're working. Of course it's not like this every night, and some nights we even watch t.v. (egad!).

Since moving, we've been spending most nights hard at work on home projects or unpacking and organizing. We can't remember the last time we read a book in the evening, and that is really depressing.

We're wondering, on a typical "normal" night for you, what kind of homebody are you?

Cup of homemade mocha (with chocolate ganache), some popovers, and a book!

All of the above! I'm on my laptop for a little while, then watch TV, and do any housework I need to.
I am trying to force myself to read one chapter of a book before bed, no matter how tired I am. Usually I read more, but forcing myself to read that one chapter makes me feel like I'm making good progress.

I usually relax by cooking dinner, reading, sewing, gardening (whoo-hoo, it's spring!) listening to NPR, or catching up with out of state friends on IM. I'm a semi anti-tech (no microwave, no ipod, no cable) and I find it most relaxing to use my hands and vacate the chatter in my mind. I cook dinner about 5 nights out of 7 just because it feels good to linger in the kitchen with a glass of wine and some jazz.

Last night I'd forgotten to pick up salad greens, so I punted with sauted frozen spinach and roasted acorn squash. What a combo! the squash is sweet, the spinach is bitter -- add a little salt and oil for the saute and it's an excellent side dish (we had salmon with crushed garlic and fresh thyme). I would have never tried this if I'd remembered to stop for greens. These is the accidental creativity that happens all the time when we're engaged in living.

Watching TV and surfing the net between bouts of doing housework. Sometimes listening to TV while painting a room or doing some sewing. Reading a book if the current one is really exciting or due back to the library soon.

Most of the above! I work out and then cook dinner, clean when I need to. I have the TV on for "company" during those activities, though I'm not really watching it. I like to keep an ear on some of the foodie and design shows for tips. After dinner, I'm usually either reading or geeking around on my computer.

Watch TV most nights, but I justify it by doing something else at the same time - knitting, paperwork, reading magazines, etc. Also always have a book in progress for reading before bed.

Most nights, I do all of the above. Otherwise how do you get anything done if you work full time.

We are currently renovating and without a kitchen. Most evenings are spent either working on the house, catching up on paperwork (I help my husband with his business), grabbing a bite to eat and watching television for about 30 minutes before I fall asleep.

I actually do all of the above- some housework, some cooking, some TV, laptop sometimes. Reading is always the lat thing I do ( because I am in bed when I do it)
I also call my Mom & boyfriend for late night chat.

I tend to mix it up, so I chose "other". After a hard day at work sometimes I watch TV, sometimes I read. Sometimes, when I am really exhausted, I just sit on the deck staring out at the plants for a while...NEVER would I do any housework after work, that's just plain crazy talk...

I'm usually in my studio, working on a project. These days, it's all about sewing summer clothes, but I also make jewelry, knit, etc. I'm usually watching movies doing all of these things...
If I'm exhausted, I'll just veg out in front of the TV or read a book before getting to bed.

Some sublime stitching, housework. I always have some sort of project. I was obsessed with popovers for a bit (okay, still...). Now it's yogurt and cheese. My boyfriend is always curious to see what weird farm hobby I've taken up that afternoon.

again wishing there were an "all of the above" option

I watch tv while on my laptop or reading a book, after having done a chore or two, or while a load of laundry is running

watch tv/ surf the net/ turn on a movie and check the movie's trivia on wikipedia, talk to a few friends on yIM, check emails, blogs, and all the other stuff I gotta do. Anything else gets kinda boring after a while.

Most of the above, as well. I try to do a little housework each night, but I also have various academic projects and the occasional sewing project that need massaging at night. I'll also play some video/computer games, if I have time. Usually, I regret not having time to cook because I enjoy it, but I can't cram that all in to the 4-5 hours before bed.

Take my dog out for a 1.5 - 2 hr romp in the park at night, come home, feed her, fix my own dinner, maybe one small laundry load, shower, bad late nite television, sleep. I actually happen to enjoy this schedule, haha. Wait that sounds really sad.

Sitting infront of the TV, WITH my laptop. How is this not an option?

All of the above. Maybe not all in one night, typically I come home, hang with the cat, cook supper, do after super chores, then do more chores that involve the computer, or laundry, or maybe watching tv and sorting bills. It really depends on my mood. I do spend too much time in front of the computer though. No laptop, which might be a good thing.

i try to maintain a balance of working and relaxing when i get home. i try to get all of my housework done as soon as i get home, make dinner and clean up then i get to spend the rest of the night in front of the tv or computer catching up on AT.

Come home, have a cup of tea while I read my design blogs (this is always the first one I read), cook dinner, watch a recorded tv show (on the we usually a film) and read in bed.

I've recently started playing rugby so monday, tuesday and thursday evenings I cycle from work to a practice field, run around like crazy and then either eat on the way home or cook something fast, have a warm shower, peruse apttherapy until my eyes are closing while simultaneously watching jon stewart...then bed. Before when I had a life I liked to ride to goodwill or the library, pick up some food, cook it, and laze about. No more.

Spossberg: I actually lived on a farm in Ireland for a year. I was semi-miserable then, but now I find myself itching to make preserves...

Also, past hobbies include spinning wool and making mead.

These days, we're getting our townhouse ready to put on the market, so I'm spending my free time working on projects for that or doing grad school homework.

Before getting married and inheriting this house, I used to spend a lot of time doing crafts (knitting mostly) while watching TV.

These days my hobby-time is reduced to painting the spare bedroom a non-bright-orange color, hemming the new curtains, or making cookies (a girl's gotta have a little fun sometimes).

I paint mostly. Since I get off of work at 3 pm I'm pretty well relaxed by 5:30. Thus I can paint with ease. :D

I go to the gym, go to class 2 nights a week, and spend an hour or two cooking dinner. We spend many evenings talking with our friends in the apartment next door. In the summer, we sit outside and eat and talk with whatever houseguests happen to be staying with us or our friends. We also built a sauna together in our shared backyard this winter!! So we sauna almost every night. Ahhh....I have a good life. :)

Another multi-tasker here. I watch tv while I'm on my laptop, do housework and cook during the commercials, and read before bed. Sometimes I find time to do my homework too :)
