Ah, Minneapolis in the seventies. Clearly the place to go for great apartments. After years of reruns we'll never forget Mary and Rhoda's studios. From the famous "M" and dark brown velvet sofa (Mary) to the beaded curtains, Indian prints and Vogue poster (Rhoda), these two had amazing style...or at least the set decorators did....
While searching around the internet for pics, we found lots more of Mary's place than Rhoda's, which is not surprising, since it was seen in nearly every episode, while a visit to Rhoda's apartment was a rather rare treat.
Enjoy the memory lane pics above and then weigh in:

So what about Mary's apartment in the high rise? I just remember Rhoda's as being really overdecorated pattern on pattern.

Now when Rhoda moved back to New York (and eventually wooed Joe) -- that was an apartment! I was never any great fan of Mary's high rise, one bedroom where she lived during the final seasons. The real Mary Tyler Moore's beach house, featured in Architectural Digest and I think in Malibu, featured bright green and pink needlepoint pillows. Apparently she did needlepoint as a crafty hobby.

Mary's... it still inspires me today because I think of flexibility when decorating. That stepdown, with the bookshelf, gave her a great place to seat people - say during a party - in what was a really small apartment (if you imagine the 4th wall up!). That shag rug, ick, gives me the shivers now!

there isn't enough here to vote on. all you see is rhoda's closet. from memory i think her place was more of a bedsit and very tiny. that's why she coveted mary's at the beginning. she'd been planning to have it.
mary's was iconic. hookedonhouses.net has a blow by blow of the set and the real house it was supposed to be in.

Lately I'm being reminded of things that made an impression on me as a kid and Mary's apartment IS one of them. We even had a sunken living room that we called "the pit" and I remember feeling on par design-wise with Mary and how cool that seemed.

Why would you have a poll like this with pictures of only one place?
Rhoda's place was a converted attic.

As a kid I thought that Mary's sunken living room was the coolest thing ever! The M on her wall always stood out to me too. When Mary moved to a new place in the later seasons, I remember hating it because it lacked the charm of her original place. I don't really recall Rhoda's apartment on the show, too bad there weren't any photos to really show what it looked like. Hard to make a decision on this poll, since only Mary's place is shown.

aren't bedsits usually converted attics?

All I remember of Rhoda's apt was Carlton her doorman.

While I loved the Mary's sunken living room and Rhoda's boho chic Ann Marie's Apartment from "That Girl!" with the inestimable Marlo Thomas was, how do the kids say it? Fabuuuuuuuuuulous, even though she was a temp in NYC and
Plus her boyfriend, her clothes...

I didn't watch this show much as a kid so I can't remember how their homes looked. The pictures above certainly don't help since there is only a small photo of Rhoda's place.

I only remember Rhoda's place on TV. She was something of an icon and inspiration for me in my adolescence. For me, Rhoda WAS the '70's, whereas Mary's character was like the tail-end of the '60's!
I've also tried to find images of her apartment set on the net with little success and it really is a shame. However, you may not get much insight into her interior but...

...and also, I read somewhere that there's Rhoda DVDs out there somewhere....
Anyway, now that you've reawakened my

Rhoda's NY boho-chic appealed to the kids; very Beatles Sgt Pepper. The parents loved Mary's more vanilla: Lawrence Welk. What about Phyllis.' Any pics of hers?

...whoops... nostalgia for that show, I'll have to look out for it for myself!

Mary's apartment (the first one, not later the one from later in the series). Although I liked Rhoda's place from the spin-off series, too.
Bar none, my favourite girl-tv-star apartment was Miss Emma Peel's. Minimalist, super modern, great artwork. Any shots of that one in the archives?

That's *Mrs* Emma Peel, k2yhe. But you're right about her apartment.

The photo of the apartment shows a Ben Shahn print. Here's a link to a better image:

The print/poster seems to be an announcement of a show of the artist's work. Reminds me a bit of Milton Glaser.

I agree, you didnt really put any pics out of Rhoda's apt, so its difficult to vote fairly. loved the show, many laughs!

The Victorian that the apartment was supposedly in is a must see on any Minneapolis tour. Near Lake of the Isles and not far from the stone bridge also shown in the opening credits.

season 1 of rhoda is on hulu, along with seasons 1-3 of mary tyler moore.

You can find season one of Rhoda on Hulu. Rhoda ends up with a one bedroom with a balcony. If you want to see Rhoda's place, start watching around episode 12.

I was more a Rhoda than a Mary, so I tended to watch the show only for scenes with Rhoda in them. When they started playing reruns of Rhoda on Nick at Night I was thrilled. But for being a window dresser, Rhoda's apartment was awfully crammed full of stuff and not all that visually pleasing.
So I voted for Mary because of that sunken living room. That was drool-worthy for a design-conscious preteen watching reruns.

I mentioned my love of Rhoda's apartment over Mary's yesterday in the post about 'Common Artwork'. Could this mean I inspired a new AT topic? I squeal at the thought.

Here's a pic showing some of Rhoda's artwork (including one of the Vogue posters that were all the rage in the 1970s)

Rhoda's apartment in NY. When I was a kid, I thought that apartment was the greatest thing ever.

Mary hands down! With the step down and the big windows and the little pull down divider to the tiny kitchen! It was my dream home when I was a kid!

sigh.... the fact that I remember any of this at all has brought too many realizations to light for me. We need a better picture of Rhoda's apt. before we can participate fairly in this poll. And to whoever brought up "That Girl"; now I have to go on a mission because I all but forgot about her!!

I have a family member who lived down the street from the exterior shot of Mary's Victorian building. (which recently sold for well over a mil) Way better than the downtown highrise box. But I loved both of Rhoda's apartments.
Must be the hippie in me...

I know what k2yhe means about Emma peel's place being minimalist. I found this image of her bed....
http://dvdmedia.ign.com/dvd/image/peel5.jpg
....How minimal was that? I mean, the poor woman had to strap herself on to it just to avoid falling off.
paintitbright, could the carpet be some kind of hideous alien lifeform that is spreading its way towards them as it grows and, all the while, releasing some kind of airborne chemical that prevents the inhabitants from noticing it. By the time that they do, it has reached their feet and started to carpet them from the ankles up until finally, they are completely enveloped by the alien shagpile which feeds on every living thing in its sprawling path, until it would seem as though every landmass on the planet may disappear under coast to coast carpet. Meanwhile, somewhere out at sea, there's a small posse of vigilante carpet-fitters, bobbing about in a rubber dinghy, determined to save the world... somehow....?

I haven't seen this show, so I don't know which photos belong to which apartment (although I can guess from the comments). Usually, in a post like this the photos are labeled better.

At last someone poses this very important question! I've thought about this, and I'm going with Rhoda's for specificity and fun.
Gawd. I love "The Tyler Moore Show."

Rhoda is at her sister Brenda's apartment in the photo above anyways. I watched religiously and loved those shows far too much. I wanted to be a window dresser, live in New York and wear a scarf on my head. None of it happened, but I got my Joe : )

Oops. That's "...Mary Tyler Moore..." Too excited. Plus watching "Hoarders," which contains no good design. Yikes.

Mary and Rhoda were my female role models, since I had no mother. I, too, long to wear the Rhoda headscarf! It's the fashion holy grail, to me.
Alas, though I've "tied one on" countless times in the privacy of my bathroom, I've never had the guts to wear it out of the house. I have short hair, and the Rhoda scarf makes me look like I'm recovering from recent brain surgery.
