Based in St. Paul, flatpatterns (aka Kevin Costello) designs unique furniture that can be easily flat-packed and shipped anywhere in the country. Costello has an interesting CV - after earning a philosophy degree, he became a designer and developed car seats for the auto industry in Detroit. He eventually left Michigan for Minnesota, opened up flatpatterns studio, and started selling furniture through Etsy...
This is by far the most creative-looking flat pack furniture I've ever seen!

It's kind of ugly, but I'd buy something just to support an independent artist working in a underappreciated medium. The price and shipping isn't unreasonable, and that is the greatest challenge to buying furniture from an artisan rather than just going down to the chain store. I hope that others can come up with creative designs like these so that Etsy can have a more robust furniture selection.
