I've had the docksta table for over a year and ended up giving it away as it was so unstable for our 2 kids to use (juice spilling is a regular occurance). Is the cb2 odyssey table better in that regard?

I bought a pedestal table a month ago. I love it, it dates from the 50's or 40s, is in solid walnut, and is adjustable : the pedestal hides a spring and a mecanism that allows you to lower the tabletop and fix it with a handle. It can be used either as a coffee table or as a dining table. To top it all off it has a leaf and can seat up to 6 people. I've never seen any like it since, even on the net, but the idea is great for smal apartments like mine, when you love having guests.

the saarinen white laminate table is so easy to live with. clean up is a breeze, the table top spins like a lazy susan (fun for dinner parties!), it goes with almost anything, & it's gorgeous in a very subtle way.

I'll take one of each, please! :)

I have the docksta table..which will have to do for now because I cannot afford a Saarinen table.

does anybody know where i can get a 42" round white table top? i have a base similar to the saarinen table and i can't find a top! i was tempted to buy the ikea docksta table but the base i have is metal and i've moved it MANY times in the last 5 years and i am dying to use it on my enclosed back porch. ikea HAD a white top but stopped carrying it--now it only comes in teal blue. i've tried searching on the web and found some round table tops...and none of them were white! i'm in chicago if anybody knows of a local place to get it. thanks!

the docksta is handsome for the price but is incredibly unstable. if you can avoid touching it, you can use standard drinkware, but if you can't you need sippy cups.

I wonder if one can pour gravel/sand in the base of the docksta to make it more stable.

And sorry to be off topic, but can anyone tell me what the chairs are? They are absolutely gorgeous (especially paired with the Saarinen). Thanks.

I have an old knock off Saarinen base too. I happened to find a used white 42" Knoll laminate table top, screwed it to the top, and bingo, all set. Last month I bought a solid walnut 42" round from the Room and Board outlet in Minneapolis, but have to wait til the kids grow up before I can use that. If you can't get up there (I see you are in Chicago) Room and Board sells their tabletops separately too:

The table mentioned by "Daniel Poitiers" (posted above) is very commonly found in Europe (especially in Germany) where houses tend to be smaller and multi-purpose furniture is considered absolutely necessary. I keep looking for versatile furniture here in the U.S. but rarely ever find it (so frustrating since shipping single pieces from abroad is cost prohibitive unless you can find a way to share a shipping container and ship a lot of furniture at once!).
