Story of a Table: First Look!

2008_07_25-TableProgress1.jpgI told you recently that I am having a custom dining table (and a couple other things) built by David Ellison of The Lorimer Workshop. Well, here are the first photos of my table in progress!

2008_07_25-TableProgress.jpgSince we commissioned the table we discovered that the current batch of lumber David is working with came from an old train station in New England. He dismantled it piece by piece and is now using the joists, floorboards, and other old wood in his custom tables.

Here's what David says about this stage of the process:

The very first stage is picking out the appropriate boards, planing the edges and gluing them together. The three boards measure 38" wide and will be cut to the 8' length. In terms of the width, it is easy to cut down to the 36" wide we talked about, but would you like the extra 2" width?

We promptly told him that, yes, we didn't mind an extra 2" of space at all. More room for more food!

So cool! We can hardly wait to see the next step.

Have you ever had a custom piece of furniture built for you?

• Visit David Ellison and see his tables at: The Lorimer Workshop. He is based in Rhode Island.

How exciting!

I've got a few pieces being built right now.

I'm a little nervous because it is my design idea and I'm hoping it turns out how I envision it.

Went to Pawtucket to see David's work in person and saw your table with stain on it. It is beautiful. The tables David makes are unbelievable! You can't help but love them. Plus, David is as nice in person as he is on the phone.
Hope you have many happy memories at your table. David, if you are reading, which I think you will, keep up the fine work!

I'm sure your great-great-grandchildren will love it when it gets handed down to through the generations too!

We recently had Travis ( http://www.tgwoodworks.com ) build us an entry table from a Stickley design. It's far and away my favorite piece of furniture - frankly, now I'm ashamed of everything else in our house.

Here are some pictures of the final project, with links to in-progress pictures - http://1402division.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/the-tables-here/
