Funny thing…I wasn’t looking to purchase a home at the time. I had just moved to Madison and planned to rent an apartment while I got a lay of the land, then stumbled upon the building and my home while helping a friend move into another unit.

Project by: Lee Location: Mequon, Wisconsin We moved into our house in 2004. At that time, the house was like a time capsule of early-70s design, so we promptly gutted the kitchen and family room. Eleven years later, I decided it was time for another update … but with the big money we sank into it a decade ago, I wanted to do it all myself this time, as inexpensively as possible. In 2004, we spent around $20,000 on our gut re-do.

Now with a longer look, it’s obvious this home is a great mix of contrasts: rough brick and flirty florals; open loft space but cozy seating arrangements.

Name: Jamie and AJ Fink / Kiddos: Sophia, Etienne, Charlotte, Laurent and Nicasio / Pets: Oliver, Audrey, Napoleon and Greta Location: Brookfield, Wisconsin Size: 3200 square feet This 1968 house on an acre of land in Wisconsin was a “time warp disaster flanked in brown,” but Jamie and AJ knocked down walls and painted to transform this house into a bright, cheery home with plenty of style and function — important with so many kids and pets who live here!
