Cole Scego: Midwestern Designer & Fabricator

010709-colescego3.jpg Many people assume that great design comes from either coast. That to be amazing you have to live in LA or NYC. Well, Midwestern furniture designer and fabricator, Cole Scego is turning heads from the middle of the country -- in Missouri. We last caught up with Cole a few years ago and since then he's been quite busy. Click through the jump to see some of his recent projects and a link to his blog (which is Midwestern in the good way, not in the everyone drives a tractor and wears overalls kind of way.)

010709-colescego1.jpg Cole works hard at keeping his work sustainable as well as modern. He does his best to produce pieces that will last a lifetime... and then some. Many of his pieces are aluminum cut with waterjet. It gives his work clean lines that lend themselves to current and classic styles alike.

010709-colescego2.jpg Most powder coating applications use only one color and a single coat. Cole often use up to 10 colors and a clear coat on a single piece.

010709-colescego4.jpg After the pieces are fabricated Cole sandblasts them and uses a set of biodegradable cleaning solutions plus a chemical seal to prep them for powder coating (which is more earth friendly when compared to traditional solvent based paints, as it contains no volatile organic compounds).

010709-colescego5.jpg To achieve multi-color, multi-layer finishes it was necessary for him to create various masking, spraying, and application techniques not commonly used in the field of powder coating.

Hey, what's wrong with overalls and tractors? Can't the Midwest ever get some love?

i am impressed at the novel powdercoating technique & the surprising yet classic silhouettes of the pieces, but the colors are hideous.

Really and truly wreck the work, turning it from timeless to dated. Like, it looks like it's from Screech's bedroom or something....I guess Dustin Diamond IS from Wisconsin.....
