Sometimes we can take the design of our home a bit too seriously. Our furniture must have names, our sheets must have high thread counts, and it must all be bought from places with high ethical standards of production.
Well here's an illustrator from Portland, who can help you crack a smile once in awhile. Click through the jump to see more of his wonderful world of animals, superheros and monsters.

Ryan Berkley operates out of Portland Oregon with his wife Lucy by his side.
Maybe we are just suckers for animals that display certain kinds of anthropomorphism, but the fact that each of his animals dress very nicely, have a story that goes with them and sometimes have a name, makes them easy to love. For instance, here's a little about "Prof. Abbott Shearwater" (the frog) you see above:
"This unassuming frog is a high school math teacher. He also coaches the mathlete team who have gone undefeated under his leadership. The students like him for his laid back attitude and his "Fractal Fridays" slideshows."
The work that is up for sale in the Berkley Illustration Etsy Store is all very reasonably priced and can usually be found in both 5"x7" and 8"x10", a real bonus when trying to work with small spaces.
Most of Berkley's work is done with pen and ink with some colored pencil thrown in for good measure. You can see a few pictures of him in action over on his Flickr.
We can see this Raven tucked away on a bookshelf, just waiting for an unsuspecting guest to walk by.
Berkley's work looks fabulous framed up and would make an excellent addition to your home, no matter what creature, animal or zombie your house has room for. There are more links below on how to find Berkley Illustration across the web, take time to check a few of them out as this is only a very small sampling of the work that he has to offer!

We have the panda, deer, and frog in our dining room. They both frighten and amuse guests on a regular basis.

I love these. I have TWELVE of them in my hallway, all framed together in two groups of six, as though they are portraits of my ancestors, and they make me very happy. They really look wonderful in groups.

OMIGOD verhext, thank you so much for posting re: JJ Grandville. An acquaintance had drawings of his in their living room, but didn't know the name of the artist. I've been looking for several months...
These drawings are great too!
