The Gallery: Max Key

Retired
Beyond loving his name, we love the oil paintings of Max Key. Currently on view at Caro d'Offay Gallery in Chicago (through April 19), Hoffman LaChance Contemporary in Maplewood, MO and upcoming at the Fahrenheit Gallery in Kansas City, MO, this Illinois native now lives and works in the Kansas City area - and we know a lot of our readers do, too. From Key's artist statement:

Gaud is good. Gaud is great. For several years now I have been studying dated interior design for its excessive patterns, forced colors, false allure, and plastic tackiness. The definition of gaudy reads as “reserved for the tasteless." Taste and beauty are subjective. It is here where I have found a profound influence for my current paintings.

lol they look just like the artwork used in 1970s' Central & South American elementary-school textbooks (of course stylized and over arranged). Nice.
