With Art Chicago and Artopolis right around the corner, we are excited to discover and feature more Chicago artists. Pamela Michelle Johnson is one of them. She is currently working on a new series of paintings that comment on American culture, which will be showing in the Artist Project ("the portion of Chicago’s annual Artropolis focused on independent artists"). Pamela says of her paintings:
My current series of work focuses on the overindulgence, insatiable appetite and mass consumption of American society. Based on traditional paintings’ history of using food as a subject matter, my work updates this notion to mirror our current culture. As such, my paintings are larger than life heaps of junk foods. Overbearing scale and gluttonous quantities are juxtaposed against foods that can be both tempting and comforting, as a result questioning American ideals and way of life.
Beyond mass consumption, Pamela also has a series called The House, in which she observes the dark side to the American dream and questions concepts of isolation.
You can see her work ongoing at Zella Brown, upcoming (Apr 25-28) at the Artist Project, and in May at Around the Coyote.
