Tips for Shopping Online During the Holidays

12-8-08online.jpg

For those who hate to deal with holiday crowds, online shopping is an attractive alternative. From your computer, you can collect a lot of information in a short amount of time, compare prices, and read product reviews at a glance. You also have to watch for scams, calculate shipping times, double check return policies, and keep an eye out for added fees. Click below for a few tips and tricks to help you navigate the web this holiday season...

  • Stick to reputable stores. If you haven't used or heard of a store before, verify their contact information and make sure they have a direct phone number with a real person at the other end of the line who you can call in case of problems. For online store recommendations from AT:Chicago, click here.

  • Keep a budget and stick to it. It can be tempting to overbuy online when a purchase can take place in seconds. Keep close track of what you've spent to avoid overdoing it.

  • Check return policies, return timelines, shipping costs, and find out what fees you'll have pay if you end up sending an item back.

  • Check the retailer's shipping timelines to make sure your gift will be delivered in time. The US Post Office also lists holiday deadlines for shipping on their site.

  • Consider buying vintage online. It's greener and often cheaper than buying new, and sites like eBay and Etsy have a wide selection of vintage goods.

  • Keep an eye out for online sales. We post many of them to our Sales Calendar, and sites like ShopStyle and ZingSale allow you to search for products by sale price.

  • Check the clearance rack. Like brick-and-mortar stores, most online shops have clearance sections with significant markdowns.

  • When shopping for electronics, you can often get better deals by buying refurbished. Stores such as Apple and Target feature refurbished sections on their sites.

just take the name of the store you want, add "coupons" on the name, and google it.

    for example

    "moma coupon"

i do this for every store i shop at. Not only will you find online coupons but you can get good printable ones as well. Retail Me Not is a good source, but i try a bunch, sometimes only one site will have a promo that the others don't.

I got 20% off at moma this past weekend. Macy's coupons that saved me a good $30 or $40, Express ones for my wife and she saved around $30 on some clothes. Lots of other things. I'll be using one for Altrec tonight for outdoor gear. Not only can you get coupons for just money off but sometimes you can stack free shipping, or you might just get free shipping in general, that can save you a bundle.

Any site you shop out check for coupons, even obscure ones will have them, like moma, never though i would find one from there.

If you're shopping on Amazon, try their free 30 day amazon prime trial. You get free 2 day shipping on everything they have with no minimum purchase. Quick way to save a bunch on shipping, have the security of Amazon, and get it fast. You just cancel before the 30 days is up.

I recognized the apartment; I love her home design!

I've been shopping online more this holiday season than ever. Online, I know if something is in stock or not (and don't have to run to 5 bookstores all over Houston) and there are no lines. Most websites have free shipping if you order over $25, so I've been taking advantage of that. Just pay close attention and make sure you are getting the free shipping (read the directions), because they do not automatically mark that option when you are paying.

the helmer doesn't have the lock on it and it also has little name card slots by the handles which i'm not seeing in this photo... there is a helmer right behind me, so i have a good reference.

I think the older version of the helmer did have the lock. The new ones do not.

I use online for most of my research and only buy online when I cannot see it in person because my initial reaction of seeing things at IKEA, CB2 and the like are always, "oh." with an emphasis on the period. Just remember things photograph better than they appear. Always do your research: read reviews & price shop.

jmorey, this was the exact thing I did before heading out to the stores on Saturday.

I was able to score really nice gifts for family using 10% - 30% off printable coupons on sale prices.

    also, try

    cheapstingybargains.com

i love this site and have been going here for years now. Not only does he post coupons to great places, but also just links to certain things that are on sale, as well as freebies. A lot of the freebies are just so-so, but there are gems in there. I get tons of razors for free from here. Schick and Gillette. You know that new one for guys that has batteries, and the actual metal beard trimmer on the other end, yeah free...

You can also search that site. I'll find things i am just looking for pop up and i'll get them cheap. Guitar hero for the wii $70 instead of $100 BAM, ram for my computer, BAM, it's great.

When i got my new tv from Best Buy a little searching found a great coupon and i got a $50 gift card for free with it.

I had to spend a lot on shipping last year, so, this year, I decided to buy online to take advantage of free shipping. The problem is, at least on Amazon, gift wrap can be twice as expensive as shipping. Just something to keep in mind.

I have presents shipped directly to my mom's house (where I celebrate Christmas). I bring gift bags and tissue paper for quick wrapping once I get there. (No extra effort hauling presents around or worrying that they'll be stolen from my apartment entryway)

Don't pay for shipping! So many places offer free 'shipping' coupons online or special offers by email. Or avoid the stores that have high shipping fees altogether (Crate & Barrel, we are SO over).

I'm all about the shopping portals that provide cash (or points back). I just learned about a great site http://www.evreward.com/ that shows you the cash or points options for almost any shopping site plus a few coupons. No more clicking from fatwallet to ebates to live.com to see which has the best cash back deal.
