Top Ten: Laundry Baskets

2006-10-25-baskets.png

This list is a request. Amy sent us an email: "Could we get a "top ten" list of best laundry hampers/containers? We just moved into a new home 2 months ago and are still using a white, plastic laundry basket. I know there are better options out there for those of us whose laundry space will be exposed (not inside a closet). Any ideas?"

  • Bamboo Lattice Hamper for $99.
  • Vipp Clothes Hamper with liner for $339.
  • Large Perforated Bin for $199.
  • Chrome Hamper with removable white bag for $59.
  • Pink and Red Laundry Box for $29.99
  • Three Compartment Tote for $39.99.
  • Chrome Folding Hamper in Black for $29.99
  • Two Hands Basket by Authentics for $? (we've seen these at Bloomingdale's Home Store)
  • Commercial Quality Rolling Sorter for $49.

Now - get ready, because this one is hard to believe (we just had to put it on the list....)

  • Compliments Large Laundry Basket for $1171.00 !!

  •

Any good laundry basket solutions/suggestions for Amy? Let us know in the comments...

What about this one from Container Store? It also comes in blue. Plus, there are rectangular, horizonal versions of both:

I'm a fan of the extra-large canvas tote bags from LL Bean. They make it really easy to shelp the dirty clothes up and down my four-story walk up on laundry day.

I am a fan of using huge metal planters. I have a nice dark grey metal one from the Conran Shop. I fantasize about being able to afford, and having the space for, these:

George--you took the words out of my mouth! I was just getting ready to post about the Boat and Tote bag! They stow away easily, and are great for other lugging around, too (for example, there is one in my office right now that I lent to my boss to lug around proposals...)

I was also going to post about the collapsible Umbra baskets. (Also fantastic for the trip to the laundry room.) I have two of the aqua stripe ones, but those new flower ones Lady J linked to are great.

the worst part about that compliments laundry basket (besides that's it really ugly)...at that price, it's even on sale. shameful.

You can find something cute and cheap. You can buy something expensive. You can even buy something very expensive. But the compliments laundry basket is already obscene. Go buy a laundry basket for $100 and give the money to charity.

    HI, For a Laundry Basket/Hamper
I currently use a Camoflage Hunting Bag (Size XL) From L.L. Bean. It's from Their Hunting Catalog and is probably used for carrying logs to the campfire etc. Not only is it really cool looking, but it's plastic canvas, easily washable. very durable, multi-purpose and Cheap Like under $35.00!
It's styled like the Classic L.L. Bean Canvas Camp bags (also perfect for laundry) but it's more masculine--perfect for single guys like me.

It holds about 2 1/2 loads to 3.

I'm with George on the LLBean totes. They fit a full load of wash - are easy to carry -- and, when sitting in the middle of my living room it looks much better than any basket I have ever owned. (Yes, laundry does not belong in the living roomd, but come on, the basket ends up there at some point to fold or iron or whatever.)
I've gone a little farther and have a second smaller tote that keeps all the laundry supplies - soap, stain remover, bleach, vinegar - all in smaller re-fillable bottles -, dryer sheets and the laundry card -- because I hate getting downstairs only to realize I left something important behind.

D*S or Decor8 had posted these a little while ago:

More on the decorative feminine side but I thought them sweet enough to bookmark them. I think 3 lined up in a row for separate colors would be nice. I might have to get rid of my bland, old target laundry "trolley".

ok, i was going through a hamper dilemma a few weeks ago. I wanted something decent, simple, hard body, didn't function like a pop-up book and didn't have Dora the Explora on it --oh, and with a hard flat top (so i could temporarily rest things on them). and above all i REALLY needed it to not cost me $30, $50 or.. $1171!

i found a perfect one on amazon for $17
    http://www.amazon.com/Whitney-Design-5601-Wicker-Hamper/dp/B0000CNQWS/sr=1-2/qid=1161885827/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-4229718-4586512?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden

i barely even notice it, which is GREAT consider it's holding my dirty laundry.

I bought this hamper from Linens N things

It's like the Bamboo Lattice Hamper on the top ten list, only it's much cheaper and it looks great too.

MN, Your Bamboo Lattice Hamper is gorgeous. Thank you for posting about it. I've wasted a lot of time trying to find the perfect hamper and dinky-doo - that's it.

In my smallish bedroom, I use something like this:

    http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=1799980&cid=99684&fp=F

I put a plastic bag inside (I have keeping an eye out for a canvas replacement though), and just pull that out to bring the laundry downstairs on laundry day. That way I have a hamper, and something to sit eon while putting on my socks. :)

of course the one i like and looked at thinking, hmmm, i could use that next to my landing strip as a "sometimes umbrella holder sometimes place to put mail for recyling" is the expensive one. (the other one i like is the 2nd most expensive one).

    argh.

You guys are worried about leaving the toilet seat up when you photograph bathrooms yet you advocate open-top laundry baskets where used and dirty clothing can be clearly seen!!

NEVER buy a laundry basket without a lid unless you want people to look down and see your dirty knickers staring back at them

If you're not worried about the style element...How about IKEA bags?

Definitely not stylish, but super practical!! I hang one on the hook on the back of my bathroom door for my dry-clean stuff in order to keep it separate from the stuff in the hamper. When I'm ready to go to the dry cleaners I just sling it over my shoulder and away I go. And they fit so much!!

(I also use IKEA bags for toy storage in our play room and for grocery shopping!!)
