As city dwellers, one of our favorite ways to escape is to get away from our crowded neighborhood, out into the country where it's a little greener. For the past two years, my husband and I have visited our friends Ed and Jess in Massachusetts, where they get their food from a CSA farm. Last year, we picked farm flowers with them, and this year we picked strawberries and snap peas...
CSA, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture, is a program that allows consumers to buy direct from local farmers. Riverland Farm is run by Rob Lynch and Meghan Arquin, who raise crops within an 18-acre organic vegetable operation. Their produce is sold to CSA members and businesses within 50 miles of the farm.
The farm houses a solar-powered share room (shown in the first photo) where members can pick up their produce. Beyond the share room are "U Pick" areas, where members can go into the fields and pick their own food and flowers.

I think these are great. Down the road from me is a family run farm that you can pick your own strawberries, apples in the fall, and cut your own flowers from their huge gardens. They bake various pies, and have local produce along with local foods. It's charming and stop there often after work. There's a community garden where locals grow their own vegetables. I know this idea is not new... I hope this is not a trend but a sustaining one.
