Foreign Currency After Your Great Escape?

081507money1.jpgBack in May, we posted a close-up of Danny & Carlos's foreign currency decor (pic below). Their colorful bills displayed over the kitchen doorway reminded us that we too have a habit of placing our leftover currency (typically of the coin kind) always in the same little Jamaican container (pic left).

We've been doing this as long as we can remember. We'd love to hear about your post-escape habits with leftover foreign currency at home. What do you do with it?

With Euros and Pounds, we usually just keep it because they are worth alot and we usually end up using it again the next time we travel since we frequently connect through Europe.

With the other currencies, before we depart, we try to break them down into smaller denominations and then give them to our nieces/nephews. To "earn" these currencies, they have to point out on the map where they come from. A good lesson in geography for them.

i put my leftover currency in a bowl in the living room. but i love the challenge of trying to rid myself of as much foreign money as possible before coming home.

during my recent trip to europe, i noticed at the airport (i think in amsterdam?) that they have donation boxes set up. so you can throw any currency in them, they'll be sorted out, and then given to charity. i love this idea.

I still have some pre-Euro coins and bills from various places in Europe from years ago that I've moved with me from place to place. I don't know quite where it is (not on display), but I periodically run across it and it's a memory blast. So, it's a memento and now because of Euros, it's a relic too. I wish I had beautiful french bills; can't remember that I do.

I bring as little as possible home, even if I give it away.

we use empty film canisters labeled with the country the coins came from... they usually perfectly fit the leftover coin that we don't or can't get rid of in time and we get to recylce the cool plastic capped tubes When we go back to the country, the coin is handy and usually sitting next to the favourite framed pic of the past trip.

Enjoying this thread. Same as above. For frequently visited countries, each has a purse that we grab before the trip. The rest live in a box. Some low value bills get glued onto the current scrapbook as a souvenier. I love trying to get rid of the little money left at the end of each trip but somehow I end up making more change than when I started out!

That post in May came right before my trip to the Philippines and Hong Kong, and it inspired me to keep a bowl of currency as well. I went to CB2 and bought a tiny ceramic bowl for a whopping 50 cents and keep it on my dining room table for now.
