An acquaintance recently described their budget-friendly vacation idea from several years back. They had a tradition of going on adventurous vacations with a group of friends each year. Well, one year when money was tight the group decided not to forgo their time together. Instead, they visited each other's homes...
Each friend planned a day trip in their neighborhood and guided the others on a tour, then hosted them in their home, providing meals and fixing up places within their home for everyone to sleep. The group moved from house to house throughout the "vacation" and by the end of the week they had toured new sites around the city, relaxed over home-cooked meals with their friends, and spent a lot of quality time together.
Since one person or couple is responsible for each day, you end up hosting for one day and "vacationing" for the rest of the time.
