The rooms at Tobacco Caye Lodge are very basic. There's no hot water or AC but for $45 per night (with three meals included!), it's a steal. And, with all this tropic beauty, who's hanging around inside anyway?

The island has a couple green practices in place to keep operations running smoothly. Rain water is collected in giant cisterns and acts as the sole source of bathroom water (sink & shower). Electricity is expensive so the island generator is completely turned off everyday from 9am to about 3pm.

Belikin is the local brewery. Tobacco Caye boats in cases of bottled beer to outfit the one bar on the island. Instead of recycling the glass, the locals told me that the bottles are actually returned to the plant where they're sterilized, refilled, and re-enjoyed.

Delicious local delicacies, like fresh seafood and coconut, is served family-style at mealtime. All guests of the lodge dine together, sharing food and the events of their day.

I took a nap everyday and didn't put on shoes once. For a full week, I was free of deadlines/errands/cleaning/commutes and my only priority was to watch (and really see) every sunset.
