Best of Chicago: Vintage Shops
Chicago Magazine

The March '09 issue of Chicago Magazine includes a helpful guide for those who live here or plan on visiting soon. Their roundup of the best vintage shops covers everything from antique malls to clothing and jewelry boutiques, but we were most interested in their sources for furnishings...

Many of their picks are AT standbys: Modlife for mid-century finds, Scout for industrial items, P.O.S.H. for vintage dishes, Room Service for furnishings, Revival for unique retro pieces, and Fort Pitt Hotel Liquidators for budget pieces.

Other go-to sources for antique furnishings include Post 27 for 50s, 60s, and 70s furniture, Olde Chicago Antiques for traditionalists, the Painted Lady for cottage chic, Daniels Antiques for heirloom furnishings, and Prairieland Warehouse for a suburban excursion.

Their list of recommended salvage shops and antique malls lines up pretty closely with ours: Jan's Antiques, Architectural Artifacts, Urban Remains, and Salvage One are great resources for home improvement scavengers. The best antique malls include northside outposts such as the Ravenswood Antique Mart, Broadway Antique Market, and Edgewater Antique Mall. Suburban recommendations cover the Jackson Square Mall in LaGrange, Gurnee Antique Center in Gurnee, Volo Antique Mall in Volo, and Heritage Trail Mall in Wilmette.

I have to add a shout-out for Haystack Vintage, which has a well-curated selection of vintage goodies and hand-crafted items, including super-cute robot paintings by the talented Andy Detskas.
