apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

I now do most of my photography editing and processing right in my favorite place of my home-the living room couch. With my new large screen laptop, I enjoy my processing time much more when I have full access to a comfortable couch, my media center, and the kitchen close by. After years of being stuck in dark music studios and offices, I so enjoy the time in my bright and sun-filled living room. With Internet, printing, and hard drives all wireless-there is no place else I would rather be.

Oh yes, all the time...
...that's where bills get paid (online), e-mail is read, etc.

The only thing I still need to write checks for is rent, so I keep my checkbook in the hall credenza - when the rent bill comes in, I write the check and leave it on the credenza with my wallet, etc for when I leave the next day.

Anything else that needs keeping goes into a drawer in the credenza and I file it about once every couple months.

When I was working on my Master's thesis, I would rotate between the couch and the kitchen table even though I have a desk in the same room. I think I got the most typing done on my couch using a lap desk to set my computer on. I know if I was able to work from home, that is where I would end up.

I used to work from the couch all the time, but my work involves a lot of typing and it caught up with me in a big way. Yeah, pay attention if your back or wrists start to hurt. Otherwise -- working from the couch is great; it feels much more social than sitting at a desk.

I wrote most of my dissertation on my couch. I had a decent ergonomic setup: a c table to hold my laptop, an external keyboard resting on my lap, and a cushion as a footrest (I have short legs). My couch is firm and shallow so the back gave plenty of back support. It was more comfortable than working at the table.

I have a large studio inside my apt. - it's actually the largest room in my place and has a big desk, sewing table, drawing table, work table, easel, photobox, etc. yet somehow I end up doing a huge amount of work in the living room/dining room. I do all of my drawing/sketching on the couch or the living room floor (unless a lot of detail is involved, then I like to work at my drafting table), bills/taxes/paperwork are done at the dining table and writing is done on the living room floor or in nice weather on the terrace. I don't know why I just don't seem to work as fruitfully in the actual studio! I even have TV/cable in there so it's not as though I'm hanging out in the living room so I can watch TV while I work. shrug

Ha, I'm doing it right now, or at least I would be if I weren't fooling around on the Internet instead.

Oh how I long to work from home even one day a week. My husband just accepted a job where he can work from home 3-4 days a week. I can't begin to tell you how jealous I am. :( Maybe I should call that "Crazy Like a Fox" company and find out how to make tons of money from home. Hah.

Anyway, when I do work at home, it's usually at my kitchen island. I find it too hard to type when I'm sitting on the couch, and it's nice to have a hard surface for writing. Our counter stools aren't very comfy, though.

more importantly, where is that couch from?!?!

i used to always work on the couch. i'd put my papers or whatever i needed to look at on one side of me and a pillow under my computer (darn thing gets hot!).
once i started working from home i ended up buying a desk with an external keyboard/mouse and it was a lot easier. since i recently moved i have been thinking more and more about connecting my MBP to my tv and using BT mouse/keyboard from the couch.

I work from home, and I use my desk. Otherwise, I'm always at work. When I get up, I'm not at work. I've got a huge monitor screen and as I gaze at photos and footage all day, I'm glad of the change when I sit on the couch and read.

Working from home is great, but you have to be disciplined about separating work time and life time. I've had European clients call me at ungodly hours, and like a fool, I take the calls.

yes and I hate it. Worst thing you can do. My back and mostly my neck is always kinked up from moving around, lying down, etc. I feel lazy and un-motivated on my sofa.

I am actually in the process considering selling my prized possesion. My Molina Oberon Sofa from Perobell (my sofa looks similar to one above, but mine has beautiful walnut block feet and mine is a bit more low profile/wider all around. Trading it in for a massive teak farm style table and just get one comfy cool rocker (dwr has that NY rocker i'm digging) with ottoman for my room instead. Couchs are overrated and serve little purpose for work. Having 3 guys over with a beer does me no justice on a $4k sofa either. Actually makes me nervous. Plus i hate to say this but we should be careful about leaving our laptops on um, our laps for too long. Not the most intelligent thing to leave a radiant hot battery on top of your know what for too long..

Our couch isn't squashy, so I prefer to do some computer work on my bed! I know you're not supposed to, but I really prefer to be on a soft surface. I think it has to do with growing up with my bed being my only piece of furniture.

I'm kind of looking for a soft chair that's somewhat desk-friendly.

my couch is too comfy, and i lose focus if i sit on it. i've been trying to do my grad school readings there, but i usually just fall asleep. all work is done in the office (and having a desktop there helps). although since i spend so much time doing work (such is the life of the grad student) i barely spend any time in my bedroom, which is one of the largest, nicest and comfiest parts of the house! go figure

hah! That's ALL we do. Whether it be for business or pleasure... we have our laptops at the damn coffee table. It's nice to have it available, but it causes such a mess around the sofa!

Sure Do! Most of the time, I'm in the office, upstairs, but when DH gets home, I'm parked on the sofa!

My default workspace in my 380 sqft. I spent most of today working from the couch.

I always do my work from my couch! I have a sectional that curves through the corner, so I just get comfy in the curve and put my laptop on my lap. I have a very short attention span, so I find I can focus better and get more done if I can spend a few minutes working, a few minutes watching tv, a few minutes working, a few minutes hugging one of the cats, a few minutes working....rather than just sitting at a desk staring at an uninspiring wall. I think I'm used to not working at a desk from my college days, when I didn't have one and did all of my work chatting with friends in the computer lab or sitting on my bed gabbing with my roommate. It's the fine art of the multitask :)

I would...if I had a couch! I do tend to sit on my bed and laptop it up, but it does a number on my back, can be disruptive to sleep patterns, etc. A couch is one of those things that I either can't afford or have been too lazy to rent a UHaul and get if I, say, found something on Craigslist.

I also work on my couch to hang out with my dog. I'll often alternate between typing on my laptop and playing indoor fetch with her.
