Panton Chairs as Desk Chairs

Last December, Apartment Therapy Boston bloggers Wes and Kayla suggested that the Panton chair just might be the "perfect desk chair". We liked the look with their Blu Dot desk and "bookmarked" it as a nice idea...

...and now, we've run across several more examples of the modern classic hard at work in the home office.

We've always thought of the Panton Chair on the more "wild" side of the spectrum of chair design, so it makes sense that it would function well as a nice visual counterpoint to the oh-so-serious world of work.

Can somebody tell me where I can get the curtain or the fabric for the curtain in the third picture? Thanks!

Sure, the chairs look interesting, but they don't appear comfortable enough to be used as regular desk chairs. Personally, I prefer something with a bit of upholstery and wheels.

Can someone give a view on how comfy the chair is for regular desk use?

I have a few of these panton styled chairs (mine are knock-offs) in my office at work and I use them as guest seating. I have never used them as desk seating for myself to do tasks on the computer. I do, however, sit in them when I am working with guests and colleagues who come to my office (I get out from behind my desk and computer when I talk to people) and I have had conversations while sitting in them that have lasted several hours. From my perspective, the chairs are very comfortable to sit in - they are more comfortable than they look. The seat and back are well designed and the chairs give a little when you lean back firmly or move vigorously (they don't recline or rock, per se, but they aren't overly rigid). None of my guests have complained about the chairs or the experience sitting in them.

I think a lot about whether a chair is comfortable or not really depends on the individual. Different people have differently shaped bodies, need support in different places and find different things comfortable. If you have to spend many hours at your desk, I think you should try out a chair in person before you buy it. If you don't spend much time at your desk then comfort may matter less (that is, you won't be in the chair long enough for it to become uncomfortable). I think there are some chairs that a majority of people find uncomfortable, but I don't think this one is among them.

I love the chair, but I would not use it at my desk chair because I prefer desk chairs that swivel and tilt, have adjustable height seating and have armrests. I spend many, many hours behind a computer. This chair would not meet my desires as a desk chair but it does meet my needs very well as guest seating and I have benn sitting in the chairs for hours at a time.

I would like to add that it isn't an overly large chair - the dimensions are pretty modest, so if you are thinking of buying one, take note of the actual measurements. This chair also comes scaled down in a smaller size for children. The children's chairs are pretty cool, too.

I use a light pick Panton chair I bought last year from Hive Modern as my at-home office chair. I also have an orange one as my guest chair in my office. Hardly anyone thinks they will be confortable, but once they sit in it, the look of surprise is evident. Probably not best for a person of extreme plus size, as the contouring of the seat might be limiting, but otherwise it's a hit. i shoud also mention I don't often get to use the one at home because one of my cats has fallen in love with the contoured seat and takes all his naps there [much like the dog in the second photo]. When not on the seat, he can be found in the "catcave" created by the base of the chair.
