If you saw Erik Knutzen's post on How To Build a Backyard Chicken Coop and you'd like more design ideas, check out this resource for inspiration.
Backyard Chickens is a great resource for those wanting to raise urban chickens. Not only do they host photos of inspiring coops, many of the coops have construction plans and building photos to accompany them. They also provide information resources (like their article "Raising Chickens 101").
Some of my favorite coops from the Coop Design section on the site are pictured above (left to right):
- Red Chicken Coop
- Recycled Rabbit Hutch Chicken Tractor
- Quality Fresh Eggs from "Two Dog Farm"
- "Chichen Paradise" Coop
- Luxury Wooden Coop
- Coop with Charred Ceder Siding

I grew up with chickens and their coops were not as nice as any of these. The first photo had me worried, as it appears to have no place for the chickens to get out of the wind or sun protections. You should keep in mind though, that every township and or city has laws about keeping farm animals in the city.
http://www.uBuilderPlans.com is also a great resource for people interested in backyard chickens. They have articles about chick brooding and chicken care for beginners and a Poultry 101 with answers to lots of common questions.
As a long time chicken farmer myself I always suggest to new owners that you use a strong fence wire, such as a stucco wire. It is much, much stronger and provides years of great protection against predators.
Also, make sure you bury the bottom of the wire at least 12 inches below ground for added protection.
