Q: We REALLY need to address the issue of childproofing our television (a one year old 27" flat screen). Our 15-month-old son is all too interested in the buttons and also in touching and pulling at things he sees on screen. We want to keep both our son and the tv safe - help!

We found that a tall buffet meant for our dining room was the best height for our TV. It's just out of reach enough, but still very watchable- and bonus! The storage beneath.
We have our 40" on an Ikea Markor: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/20102516
Which is tall enough that our one year old can only just reach to top and he is a long way off reaching the actual TV which we have pushed to the back. We also have taken the knobs off the doors which seems to have successfully foiled him opening the doors, which protect the cable box, consoles, knick knacks etc. As well as keeping that all looking neater the shatter proof glass also allows remotes to work.
We also use the 3 open shelves for his toys, I rotate them out so he has a changing variety and it all works wonderfully for the whole family.
Plexiglass, cut to fit and secured with elastic. You can have them drill small holes in the edges. Remotes will work through it, but hands can't. :) We had it over CD shelves, bookshelves, in front of the tangle o' cords, etc. Worked very well and wasn't horridly ugly.
We ended up wall mounting ours. Our first child was awful with the TV, DVD and digibox. We bought a bracket for the TV and built in some recessed shelves next to it for the other stuff. it has been one of the best things we ever did. We now have three kids and I think I would have gone crazy trying to keep each one away from all that stuff.
If you don't want to cut your own plexiglass, you can buy a ready-made piece online to block the buttons: http://www.amazon.com/TV-Guard-Button-Blocker-Monitors/dp/B000B6MKSS/ref=pd_sbs_ba_1
Also you should consider securing the TV to the wall with a safety strap, so the TV so it doesn't fall over on him: http://www.amazon.com/Ready-America-4520-Screen-Safety/dp/B001132UEE/ref=pd_cp_hi_1
we used the ready-made plexiglass cover on our tv and stereo and said, "no buttons" over and over again. this rule applied to ALL buttons, including the remote and telephone. keeping it simple helped us to enforce it.

We bought one after our 1 year old took a ball point pen to the screen (came off with rubbing alcohol!). Also protects against flying toys, video game controllers, etc.
