What I Love About My Small Home:
We designed and built almost every piece of furniture we have, and all with a purpose to make the most of our small, shared space. Everything is multifunctional - we combined a workspace and entertainment center on a paneled wall with lighted shelves; our bed is built with a back along two sides to double as an area for lounging, and hides a futon mattress for guests underneath; and our floating kitchen table is built high enough to serve as a bar and prep area while creating a feeling of openness in the kitchen. It really feels like we have transformed what was once a dingy apartment into a functional and inviting place. (And it can all be taken apart when we go.)
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
Lots of air, light (even artificial), and greenery really help make our small space feel bigger than it is. We usually have our windows open and a fan or two going to keep the space feeling fresh and airy. We replaced all the lighting fixtures, added built-in lights everywhere we could, and put them on dimmer switches so that each room can have its own feel. And we keep plants and trees in every room that make the space feel natural and alive.
