Name: Christopher
Location: Mission - San Francisco, California
This is my home in the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco. I have spent the last 10 years restoring the grandeur of my Queen Anne flat. When I got it it had suffered 100 years of neglect.
I've stripped and restored the trim where possible and replaced it where it was missing. The mission has traditionally been a working class neighborhood. Like others in the neighborhood, my house was always modest. It wasn't that the missing trim had been stripped in some overzealous update, say in the 50s, like its contemporaries. It just never had all the fixings to begin with. In that sense it hasn't been a restoration so much as a completion of what could have been.
I juxtaposed my love of Danish modern with my love of traditional architecture and craftsmanship. I like the tug-of- war.
Thanks, Christopher!

I was born and raised in San Franciso-IN THE MISSION. And I would not go back even if I COULD afford a home there. And that saddens me because I think SF is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world but it really has gone down hill with the crime and filth. BUT your home is lovely and I applaud you for putting so much thought and love into your home. It truly is beautiful. Would like a HOUSE TOUR.
Yes, I wanted to see more too. Love what you have done and the serenity you have captured.
Beautiful home - tour, please!
I absolutely adore your home.
I don't think Christopher asked anyone's opinion on his neighborhood. I'm sure he will be very happy you pointed out he lives in crime-ridden filth. Jeez.
Lovely! So I can't tell from the picture (bad eyes I guess) - is that a real bird in your hand? And - is there another in the little cage back there? I too would love a full tour.
Even though I am not a big fan of mid century stuff, I really love this home. So clean and sophisticated.
Crime and filth? Like that's not everywhere. Fantastic place, love all the dark rich colors. House tour, please!
i especially love the two colors you chose for the living room - the color above the fireplace and the one on the walls. genius! could you share them with us, please?
Do you let your societies fly and perch outside of their cage?
Agreeing with RUMAGOGO. Christopher's place is lovely. If you want to make rude comments regarding neighborhoods take it to sfgate.com. Pretty sure you just offended a ton of AT readers who call The Mission their home. Tell us where you live so we can snarky comments about your home.
<3. Definitely would love to see a full house tour. What a great space and it's obvious how much love and care you've put into this place..
Beautiful! I don't know that I've seen a drum pendant with a ceiling medallion before - I really like it! Unexpected and interesting mix. :)
I love that large photo of redwoods with the paint color and the bedding. The Danish chairs are wonderful.
I lived in SF nearly 20 years, in and on the edges of the Mission for most of those years (even owned a house on the edge of the Mission). The Mission is a vibrant and ever-evolving community, with no more problems than are present in any high-density city. I loved living there.
You did a fabulous job on your flat, creating a calm oasis in the busy city. I'm coveting that dining set and chairs!
Beautiful job. I love the bed. Where did you get it?
Christopher, I love your home. I live in the mission too and completely understand what you mean by 'completion' as opposed to renovation. Well done!
Dear LyonStill, Good riddance to you, from the Mission, SF, CA.
I've signed on for the first time to comment on this fabulous home. I think the combination of Modern and traditional is highly sophisticated and difficult to pull off, and you've done it. I also love your colour palette: it's warm yet masculine, and not trendy. Truly, this is well done --congrats!
Full tour, please! Or a Before & After, because I'd love to see what this apartment looked like after 100 years of neglect.
Beautiful, inviting and cozy!
Wonderful job!
I am loving most of your apartment but I love the bedroom..such great height and nice pieces, interesting and cozy but not over done.. The art over your bed is a digital on foam core right? Just thinking of our earthquake issue. I love the art and all the furniture.
I love the mission accept for 16th street.
Very nice, I especially love the non traditional bedroom arrangement.
Love it! Especially the large photograph above your bed- it really broadens the space, if that makes any sense. And what a charmer of an apartment, what with both gorgeous crown moldings AND a modern kitchen.
wonderful --would love to see a full tour. love the bedroom and all the rest Well Done !
This place is sick!
I lived in the Mission for many years and would go back in a heartbeat. It's a big neighborhood and while there are spots that are more rough around the edges than others, that's no reason to condemn the whole area.
Beautiful place, Christopher.
Gorgeous!
I really like the light fitting in the bedroom. Is it vintage?
Hi,
Where did you get your bed frame please.
Love your place
Christpoher, I LOVE your flat. The perfect mix of colors and textures. I would die to have your owl side table! I would love to see a full house tour!
Fantastic home. What stands out most are your color choices - outstanding.
Lovely! Great color choices! Curious about the ceiling light fixture in the bedroom....looks very interesting. More please!
The architectural details in these old homes are so exquisite and you've done a nice job restoring them. Love the owl sidetable in front of the fireplace--and that fireplace is beautiful. I can imagine how nice it would be to have it working, especially in winter or maybe even summer, since it is SF, but I have no idea how costly that would be or what it would even entail. Your paint selections are nice too. I especially love the huge photograph of the Redwoods over the bed--now that almost made me cry. One always misses some things about home wherever your life takes you. I also agree with Lyonstill's sentiments that San Francisco is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
full house tour please.
I like how old traditions are living side by side -- most notably the ornate moldings that don't naturally "go" with the Danish modern chairs but have managed to become friends anyway. Kind of like disparate neighborhoods that enrich each other in the same city, and SF is definitely the epitome of that idea.
The drum pendant with the plaster medallion is another example of that idea, but honestly -- every single instance of Christopher's lighting is a stunning choice.
My sister lives in the Mission on Dolores St. with her husband and 2 small children, from what I've seen on streetview it looks like a pretty nice neighborhood.
I also live in the Mission in what I consider a very nice neighborhood. If I ever manage to get my apartment featured on AT, I'll gladly find a way to include a glimpse into the neighborhood as well ... show you exactly how misled you are.
Beautiful job, Christopher.
Beautiful apartment! The Mission is a great neighborhood that still gets a bad rap, unfortunately. It's either too dangerous or to "hipstery." I live in the Tenderloin in SF and am always defending my neighborhood.
Regardless, job well done on mixing various architectural and design elements. Many of us in SF share the same delightful challenge.
San Francisco changes from block to block. An 'upscale' block can be separated by a sketchy block simply by the moat-like parks that exist in the city (Precita and Duboce) or an intersection. It's part of San Francisco's 'charm'.
Back to Christopher's great space...In the photo with the dining set, is that the kitchen or a formal dining room? I'm thrown off by the visible cabinetry and no sign of sink, refridgerator and stove.
Love your place and would live in the Mission in a heart beat. I heart SF!!!
Beautiful, I would love to see more photos. House Tour? Where is the large photo above your bed from? Thanks!
If I moved in tomorrow I wouldn't change a thing. I love it all.
Love! Is that the same wall color in the first 4 photos? What is it?
I hate this guy because I love his flat.
Great work, C. The devil is in the details, and you've got the devil by the tail.
