We were recently approved as adoptive parents, but we have no idea when we will be matched with a child or what gender to expect. Being a chronic preparer, I couldn't help but dive into setting up the nursery anyway.

I found a nursery created by Susan Weinroth for her surprise gender baby and I thought the colors were perfect for a fun gender neutral nursery. I adapted the wall color and white band for our nursery and embraced the color scheme.

In order to pass the time while we worked through a mountain of paperwork and interviews, I started working on handmade projects, rather than purchasing off the shelf items.

The jumping off point for the theme was the quilt. I picked up the hibiscus print on a vacation to Hawaii and coordinated with fabrics at my local fabric store. I also made a pillow for the rocking chair, the crib skirt. and basket liner using the same fabrics. These fabrics scattered around the room tie the room together.

I also summoned up the knitting lessons my paternal grandmother gave me when I was seven and my mother-in-law gave me a refresher so that I could knit the teal blanket.

I had a difficult time finding off the shelf frames for several acrylic seashore paintings we inherited and I couldn't bring myself to order custom frames. So instead, I picked up some crown molding and an old-school miter box at the hardware store and made my own. It took more elbow grease then I expected, but they turned out great. I peppered around a few of my own photographs that fit into the theme, including a canvas of yellow kelp and a black and white print of a hibiscus flower from our trip to Hawaii.

My favorite part of the room though, are all the heirloom pieces that I saved growing up. The yellow and white zigzag crochet blanket in the crib was made for me as a baby by my maternal grandmother. The quilt on the rocking chair was a graduation present from my aunt. The word blocks she included are selected scriptures from the Bible. I have my first Christmas dress folded up in the dresser, just in case we're matched with girl.

The room is just swimming in projects made with love. It a beautiful place to sit and wonder when our baby will be brought into our lives.
