Photographing Bekki and Gary's kitchen this month reminded me how much I love the look of black and white checkerboard tiles. Whether ceramic, linoleum or vinyl, this classic flooring can evoke a range of moods and styles, from retro 50s kitsch to grand Hollywood Regency a la Dorothy Draper.
Linoleum and vinyl tiles are both relatively cheap, durable, soft on the feet and legs, and easy to clean and maintain. Vinyl virtually replaced linoleum in the 1950s but linoleum is experiencing a resurgence, due in part to its all-natural and eco-friendly profile. And if you want to maintain your wood floors but like the checkered look you can also paint your floors in checkerboard, as seen in Image #3.
This Old House is a goldmine of information about the difference between vinyl and linoleum. Did you know, for example, that retail stores, day-care centers, and hospitals prefer linoleum flooring because of its natural bactericidal qualities? This Old House also offers tutorials on laying vinyl flooring.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love black and white checked floor tiles, but they have to be laid on the diagonal. Anything else (pic 10) just looks odd.
looooove!!
Love it! I had them in my entryway at my last house, and I plan to put them in my kitchen when we renovate our current house.
oh! I miss mine :( they were all peeling and damaged, our landlord replaced them with plain, white. Devastating!
The other thing about checkerboard tiling (besides putting them on the diagonal) is to remember to include a black border. It makes the effect more finished and classier.
I'm a big fan of the checkerboard - it's simple and timeless.
Wow!! These are great!!
love love checkerboard floors! We plan to put them in our entry hall and into our kitchen for a seamless look.
I really like these floors! I think 1&6 are my favorite.
Love the classic combo of black and white checker. Not only is it great in kitchens, but we have a marble checker floor in our bathroom:

#1 looks blue because of the light from the window. I think I like that better than classic black!
mmmmm if I ever buy the first thing I will do is put black and white checkered floors in the kitchen.
So, does everyone agree that it look odd NOT to put it at a diagonal? I am actually getting ready to do checkerboard tile in my kitchen and I would like to not spend the extra money to do the diagonal. What does everyone think?
I have always loved the black white checkerboard floors either way...straight OR diagonal. We installed our own recently in our small 10 by 13 kitchen and we went with just the straight layout. It looks great! We get lots of compliments with our white IKEA cabinets, butcherblock counters and professional stainless stove and hood.
As professional designer/craftspersons, my husband and I have found that most of the popular restaurants have black and white tile flooring installed straight instead of diagonally (and have done so for decades). Black and white checkerboard flooring, by no means, needs to be installed on the diagonal.
I sell continuous black/white checkered flooring. Not the squares. I've been importing it for 7 years. Couldn't find it for our own HARLEY garage years ago, so I import it. Great quality! It's the only floor I sell. Been a great product! I'm on eBay under CRAFT ENTERPRISES. I take all major credit cards and Paypal. GREAT PRICES!

Checkerboard floors are the best! We installed a black and a white granite and marble stone tile floor in our kitchen and absolutely love it! DIY installing marble and granite checkerboard floor
We were first looking into vinyl, however after a while determined we prefer real, old fashioned materials. I'm sure vinyl works in some areas, however I'm very happy with the way our stone floor came out.
Hi everyone! Check out our new site for black & white checkered checkerboard flooring (continuous vinyl sheet), not sticky squares. The only flooring we sell! Excited to finally get our site up and running. ~ Michele Craft- Owner
