Close friends of mine have a brownstone in Brooklyn — they are both artists unafraid to be decoratively daring, and have invested every room in the house with a unique color.
The overall palette of their home reminds me of that in The Winslow Boy.
Silver Fox is one of those wet cement colors that looks like a warm grey on the wall, but comes off of a brown page in a fan deck. A breathtaking Italian gilt-framed mirror hangs over the fireplace, and the warm base of this color picks up on the red in the gold. Although the decor of this room has changed over the years, this color always brings everything into balance, and across a variety of styles: modern, Mediterranean, contemporary as well as the artists own work.
Just as the name implies, Silver Fox is a quiet classic.
If the room you will be painting is lacking natural light, try Benjamin Moore's Abalone instead — it's just a shade lighter.

Why not just call the color "Anderson Cooper" by Benjamin Moore?!?!
this post is making me second guess the color i just picked out, benjamin moore metropolitan. arg, picking grey paint is hard!
Wow! We have Silver Fox on 3 walls in our bedroom. The 4th wall is Sienna (a deep brown). I love the combination and Silver Fox is a favorite of mine - kinda of the same color as our bathroom tiles too.

One of the reason's it looks good in this photo is the dark floor. Trust, me, I've tried it with a lighter floor, on with a more warmth and... meh. No good. Thank god it was only a test! The "perfect" grey for that mid-tone, gold/orange floor is still a mystery IMHO.

I agree - That paint color works so well because of the elegant trimwork and the intensity of the contrast...
...I doubt it would be so hot in a plain box apartment w/ Landlord-beige wall-to-wall.
What chair is that?! I'm pretty sure I have the same one in brown. think it's a steelcase, but I'm not sure. Any clues?

Our new grey is Ralph Lauren's Artist's Studio. LOVE it. Has more of a blue undertone than brown.
Are you sure these artists aren't bankers? These yuppie artists must run an art factory and spend loads of time thinking about decorating their rooms. Such is the post modern life. Doesn't quite square right.
Etherprojects, It depends on whether they buy from high end store or know how to shop for great thriftstore finds or how often they buy because if you go at it right, you CAN decorate on a level that belies your actual spending budget by buying larger case pieces when you have saved up and found the right one and many people don't go buying it all at once either.
As for the gray in the room, very nice and i like how it's more formal feel with its more formal details and juxtaposing it with the Danish/MCM modern pieces gives for a nice, warm room.
Can someone confirm that this really is Silver Fox in the picture? It looks so light here I wonder if it's in fact Abalone, one shade up
