I had a similar telephone to this, from Restoration Hardware, I think. I hated to use it because I couldn't tuck it onto my shoulder to talk, the design of the receiver is not flat and smooth like the old phones were, it's a little slicker with a ridge along its spine. Tough to hold onto, talk and do anything else at the same time. Cute, just not practical.

I realize there's little love for Pottery Barn, but we bought this brushed silver countertop phone from them a couple months ago. It's our first landline in seven years, and if we were going to have a phone, it was going to be a 20 pounder.

meh.....it just reminds me of the yellow, green, or creme rotary phones we all had in the kitchen in the 70's and 80's....ours was always clean, but I remember friends phones having gunk and grime in all the number slots...GROSS!! No one ever seemed to wipe down their phones so they were filthy. It is still waaaaay too close to that for this to be cute.

JenDavid99, thanks for that insight! Comfort of use is the whole reason I like the old phones better. Glad you made that comment and saved me from the aggravation!

Good for you Elizabeth, keeping your land line (unless you're looking to get rid of it, of course). My family used cell phones for years in place of a land line before it was in style, but just recently my girlfriend and I got rid of our cell phones and got our land line... I would never go back. The convenience I lose doesn't compare with the mental health I gain; I like the fact people can't interrupt me when I'm taking a walk, that I pay attention to my surroundings when I go places instead of talking on my phone to fill the time, etc.

Also, my land line cordless phone looks like a Star Trek phaser.

Amen, David. I've gone back to landline as well. I miss the days when people couldn't reach you all the time.

this post reminds me of the yellow wall-mounted phone we used to have in our kitchen when growing up. only a couple of weeks ago i was watching a movie and the same exact phone we had rang in the film's house. aw.

i'm intrigued by the idea of getting rid of my cell phone and just going back to a landline now because of your comments. hmmm!

I second that amen, David! I use my cell phone for my convenience only. Most of the time it's off or a forget to charge it. I refuse to be available 24 hours a day. And it's just plain rude to answer it when you are with spending time with someone else or (like people seem to think is FAR too okay these days) in the bathroom stall, or while checking out at the grocery store. It's just common decency.

I really like the original design for the kitchen wall mount - $30 or so vintage.

I don't have a land line, but if I do opt for one down the road...I would certainly get a wall-mount, push rotary.

I went into Pottery Barn Kids recently and saw a phone that looked similar to the silver one brozek posted above, except they came in colors (I saw red and pink) and they were cordless. It actually made me want to get a landline.

And I agree with BlahdeBlah, I miss when people couldn't always get ahold of you. I feel guilty if I ignore calls from friends, but sometimes I just don't feel like talking. But cell phones sure can be convenient and I definitely feel safer having one when I'm on a long trip.
