Classy Closet Redesign with Minimal Material

Our hall closet needs exactly this treatment. The plaster is failing, it's dark and cluttered, and the space is not being used efficiently. This simple DIY redo included some paint, bead board, hooks and an Ikea shoe storage unit. Nice and simple. See the DIY below the jump...

The owners, Aaron and Jeannie, blogged about their closet renovation at their blog House in Progress. They are not a fan of hangers and instead prefer hooks. I'll admit, I'm a huge hook lover but I need both.

Their project included these steps:

  1. Bead board to cover up a mess of wallpaper and falling plaster in the back of the closet.
  2. Paint the interior a uniform color to brighten it up.
  3. Hooks installed on three levels: low for their daughter grace, medium for Jeannie, and up high for Aaron.
  4. SKAR shoe storage units from Ikea were installed inside the closet on both sides.

A nice clean closet like this is just the thing to provide incentive to visit after a day at work to put away your shoes and jacket. Ours, dark and disorganize, is not something I look forward to and is generally where I toss my shoes and pack before I head to bead.
