The look of the clever hook is just an unfortunate successor of the bedbug post.
the pincher looks like a pterodactyl skull.
The force of gravity is usually enough for the kind of stuff that I hang on hooks...
It is ugly (and that's a funny bedbug comment!), but functionally it reminds me of the Lumb-r-grip hook, which digs into a wooden beam harder, the more weight you hang on it. (I think I saw it first here, a year or two ago, and I bought a package of them, and they were great. I use them in my basement to hang bicycles.)
