How about an escape to a 103-year-old mansion set on a rock in Narragansett Bay off the coast of Rhode Island? Boston architect Henry Wood shares his weekend bohemian retreat — Clingstone — with The New York Times. Maintained by guests who pitch in with cleaning, painting and various projects, Clingstone is a celebration of salvaged materials, hard work and community spirit...

There are 23 rooms and hundreds of windows in Clingstone and they require a lot of upkeep. Read all about the annual maintenance weekends and history of the home in The New York Times: Who Lives There: The Old House and the Sea. Don't miss the slideshow!

I live in Newport, RI and see that house almost every day! I had an amazing opportunity to walk through it last summer. Quite possibly the most unique and intriguing house I have ever seen. It can be rented for weeks - months at a time. A wonderfully peaceful retreat less than a mile from the crazy summer tourist season.
LOVE!!
I often fantasize about having a big falling town house with room for lots of friends.
wow.
I've admired this place and pissed off my onboard guests by idling too close/too long one late summer afternoon during Newport Jazz Festival. great feature in NY Times today.
fantastic article. Thanks for posting.

I'm friends with the owner of this place and have been there for several of the work weekends. It's quite amazing.
How might one possibly go about renting this wonderful home for a week?
