Sprout Side Table
I know this was just a sampling of the designers but I sincerely hope that they were able to find some designers who weren't white. Talent comes in all colors people! I am so tired of all these websites and mags that only feature white designers. There is a whole world of African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and all other people of color, DESIGNERS! Imagine that!
cittykitty--Did you look at the photos?
My goodness cittykitty, did you take a minute to go to the website? Had you, you might have seen that the featured designer at the top of the cite is Wandie Kabule - she's a striking African American travel blogger from LA.
While I completely get that minorities can be seriously underrepresented, this doesn't seem to be the case here. No need to escalate it based on a perceived slight, especially without bothering to take even a precursory glance.
i'm confused. there seems to be a couple of different ethnicities in those photos. maybe you were blinded by the beautiful rooms....
Umm... there's a difference between what's posted on the site and what AT posted. Are we all required to go to the linked sites before we can post comments? I don't think so.
And, yes, there is an Asian American in the photos on AT.
Taureg--I didn't go to the site before commenting; I just noticed what cittykitty seemed to have overlooked, in at least 2 and possibly 3 of the photos.
That site is a voyeur's delight. I wish the photography was less contrived, but it can't be easy shooting this kind of project.
Thanks for the link.
When is AT going to address its ongoing spam problem? Especially when visitors post about links springing trojans.
I'll stick w/ the Sartorialist for fashion pics!
modified tubesock:
Thanks for that. I like those pics a lot!
Well Golly! there were NO comments then all of a sudden boom! Listen instead of all the comments about this one article, why not visit elle decor and comment on why of the 3 people (one in an ad, 1 asian designer last page) of color in their last issue, one of them was Michelle Obama! Last I heard, she is no designer (definitely NOTHING against the First Lady!!). Visit house beautiful and ask them when was the last (or first) time they featured a designer of color?? Even in one of their "what was my favorite x", only white designers. In January they must have had 3 pages of designers with the question of the month (whatever it was) not ONE was of color! Instead of your "didn't you look at the pictures? indignation, why don't you look at the pictures? Every time you open a mag or site, especially these shelter mags and sites, you look at the pictures. Notice anything?
Citykitty, I understand your frustration. I am of mixed ethnicity (Japanese/Caucasian) and I always hope to see more mixed actresses/models in the media. Also, characters and storylines that present mixed race families. If you check the site out however, the site does seem to present a diverse group of women.
The last picture above is of Alicia Lawhon who from what I understand is a well known Latino stylist.
I'll stick to sartorialist too but I kind of like these ladies are like myself, something I can pull off. But, I was really hoping to see more actual closets! I love closets.....
CittyKitty, The first photo is of an Asian woman. Is she not "Asian enough"?
CityKitty, why are you so obsessed with race?
wow - i used to read comments for helpful insights (answers to questions like, where can i find that lamp?) and funny remarks.
seriously people... calm down. between this and the comments on a recent post regarding getting a good nights sleep, the at community is becoming a little less than welcoming.
cittykitty, I don't think anyone is disagreeing with your general point, just confused by your taking it out on this particular article, when 3/5 of the women above are not white.
Perhaps... look at life as a tapestry rather than a mirror.
I LOVE her heels!!!
haha I didn't even notice the RACE of the gals, had to go back and look! all I could see was that cute gals HEELS!
What about House Beautiful's top ten interior designers, usually it is 8 men and 2 women. Why is that in a business that is dominated by women. What about an issue of Elle Decor featuring "Women in Design", and when you look at the interiors they feature in that issue, one is designed by woman.
this entire thread makes me sad. isn't it possible that each of us sees the world differently and no less validly? cittykitty is pointing out a pattern in the media that is not a new one - it is well documented in study after study. whether you noticed the race of the women featured in the post or not, isn't cittykitty's point worth thinking about? you may not agree in the end, but why not consider a possibly different perspective? and for goodness sake, can't we get beyond making assumptions about who we think people are based on what they look like? the standard and traditional check boxes of racial classification are quickly becoming obsolete.
Funny what you focus on--I noticed just from the photos posted on AT that "successful women" are all young, and apparently all in the entertainment/fashion/design business. I was hoping to the closets of all sorts of successful women. Of course most of the folks whose homes are posted on AT are in the design biz somehow;I would love to see more great homes from folks whoa aren't architects, designers or artists. We all want to live in beautiful spaces!
"Funny what you focus on--"
Me, I'm mesmerized by that dog... !
Interesting interiors too; particularly the bright yellow Eames chairs in the second interior -- love their brightness, and the big vase of wildflowers, which lighten and brighten the heavy arts and crafts-style dark panelling.
But the gorgeously grinning hairy dog takes the cake!
Does anyone know where I might find a patio set like the one Claire Cottrell has in her feature? I can't get over it!
This is less interesting version of www.stylelikeyou.com
This website showcases artists of every media possible, their closets and living spaces. It is beautifully done and undoubtedly more inspirational. These women look like the same women you see on every fashion blog for the everyday women.
"The everyday women"? I don't even know if I want to know what that means. Sounds elitist enough...
great speakers (And what looks like vintage mcintosh equipment) in the first pic. and i thought woman hate big speakers, especially with their grills off, crowding their living rooms!! looks great combined with all those design classic pieces of furniture. my kinda of girl
ah glad someone else noticed the big JBLs!
i'm a huge fan of this site, as well as jeana sohn's blog, and thrilled to see it covered on AT. her subjects so far have been concentrated in l.a. and it seems in the los feliz / silverlake area, so i'm hopeful she'll expand with more styles and more posts!
People's reactions to CityKitty's comment are defensive because her initial comment was also defensive (rightly or wrongly..). If you really want people to think about a really valid issue like this one, you can't approach it by putting people on the defensive right off the bat.
I was focusing on the dog too!
The shaggy dog is quite a looker.
That we can all agree on.
Last comment on this article I promise! you are right thistinder, I was defensive just having taken a spin around cyber world and seeing the same old situation, lack of representation. I was frustrated! Sorry if I offended anyone. However, comments like salemagnet28's really do prove that some of those who are the beneficiaries of privilege don't even KNOW that they have it. Imagine that you were white and you were born and raised in some fictional African country and ALL of the people on TV, in the mags, online etc were Black. Wouldn't you think sometime, "I sure would like to see people who look like me in these mags, tv etc"? It would be very strange if you didn't. My issue is that this is America! "the melting pot" we should by now be more inclusive, like krisse said, that includes more women too! I agree with taxidriver, and think that "traditional" will remain traditional and soon turn to old without a much needed infusion of new ideas, new people and new cultures. Instaed, let's talk about??? yeah the dog.
Thanks for introducing us to this wonderful site. The artist has a good eye. She knows how to pose her model in such a way to show off the unusal spots in their home. She knows how pick out the most interesting clothing items from their warerobe. She shows how the models mix different style and vintage to make their own comfortable style. Great job keep up the good work
wow, how annoying.
All right, here are my two cents on the race issue: I actually see two women of colour in those pictures. But, truthfully, I don't see why someone should be chosen because she is of colour or not of colour, but based on her talents. Should people be chosen BECAUSE they are of colour? Does that really mean equality, it seems to me that this is the opposite of equality and further singling out people because they are of colour. Citykitty, it seems as though you have a chip on your shoulder, and you need to address it inwardly and not outwardly. This is definitely the wrong venue.
