Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior... When it comes to luxury items, for many, it's all about the labels. Designer Bridget West, based in London, has taken that theory and given it an eco twist, by making custom pillows made completely of... labels!
Spotted on Inhabitat, her company, Pieces of You Homeware, makes custom textiles for the home using recycled and ethically sound textiles. She also lectures on ethical design and consumption throughout London. We especially love her Handle with Care, and Bespoke "No Logo" cushions. Check out the rest of her work at her website. Well, that's interesting (sort of... for those who actually like labels), but this strikes me as yet another example of the recent trend toward pillows whose only function is visual. The fabric that today's clothing labels are made of is the nastiest, scratchiest stuff imaginable, and I'd be tearing them all out if it weren't for the care instructions. I certainly wouldn't want a pillow made out of fabric like that, any more than a pillow made out of vinyl, or burlap, or covered with uncomfortable, fragile gewgaws. I grant that not all pillows are what we might call facial-quality softness, but if I can't even use a pillow as a cushion for my back as I settle onto the couch, it's pretty useless. But judging by the ornamental pillows currently on the market, I must be in a tiny minority and the rest of the world must regard pillows as solely decorative.
