Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: I love how when it rains it smells like camping, there are a million different birds, and it's peaceful, private and only 5 minutes from downtown San Diego. I can't believe how lucky I am to live here.

Biggest Design Challenge With This Space: The space is long and narrow, and the 1920's windows open out, so it limits placement of plants and furniture. Also, I've given up on growing vegetables because the squirrels always beat me to the ripe tomatoes.

Tips for Creating a Great Small Outdoor Space: My Top 3 Tips for a great small outdoor space:

  1. Versatility with the furniture. You never know when you want to have a party or take a nap. The futon folds out for napping, the little dining table folds flat in case I need to make more space for extra people. All the chairs ane light and easily movable. The extra large plants are on wheels.
  2. Make sure plants that require more frequent watering are in large pots so that you don't kill them when your life gets hectic or the weather suddenly heats up.
  3. All furniture should be super comfortable and cushion covers and throw pillow covers machine washable and dryable. If the furniture looks nice but you and your guests find yourselves heading inside after a short while, you probably have the wrong furniture. I had some really great looking chairs at the little outside dining table that looked beautiful but were just OK in the comfort department. I ended up replacing them with super comfortable ones that I bought at a thrift store for $7.00 each, and now we linger at the table for hours.

Thanks, Colleen, and good luck!
