We all know that wall color changes everything about a space, which is why it gives most of us pause when planning a room painting project. We ran across a cool planning tool today and used it to quickly make the four very different room photos...
...above. Everything is the same in the images, from the amount of light to the placement of the furniture, yet the "feel" of each space is radically different. The personality changes.
The paint color visualization tool we used to experiment with the photo is from the Ralph Lauren Paint site. It allows you to select one of four rooms and then drag the colors of your choice into place. It's easy to change your mind as you go, simply drag in a new color to get a new look.
Let's say that you arrive at a combination that you like - you can then change which area of the room it appears in, so you can swap the trim with the wall color, the accent with the door color, etc. etc. until the amounts feel harmoniously balanced.
It's possible, once you are done with your personalized palette, to order samples of your colors with one click.
It's a bit of fun and a wide range of colors are included - check it out if you have a few minutes to play or bookmark for the next time you are getting serious about changing things up at home.

When i first read this i was honestly feeling snarky thinking "oh... a paint tool, revolutionary!" honestly, this paint tool is actually programmed well and the light plays properly. VERY COOL!
That's very fun!
now, if you can only upload a picture of your own room....that would be revolutionary! This is just a simple plug n chug.
Yes, nkr. I wish you could put in your own room with your own furniture. That would be awesome.
this is great and just what i need. i know uploading a picture of my own room is too much to ask, but i had hoped you can also change furniture color. ;)
Cool, but I'm skeptical about the light...
if one can't do it with a photo of one's own room, then what's the point?
I agree. This is all pointless until you can upload your own photos. While there are programs on CD and DVD that will let you do that, I have not heard of any online that do.
Behr.com lets you do just that - upload your own photo and color it with their entire collection of paint. The tool is a bit tricky, in that it doesn't always do what you want (I had the most trouble trying to paint the outside of our house where several of the details were very similar in color to the siding - it couldn't tell them apart), but fun nonetheless. It may work better with higher resolution photos - I was using some pretty dinky pics.
You can also use their sample photos, of which they have many in each category (kitchen, bedroom, exterior...). And, like RL, you can then order samples off the website. If you create an account (I haven't gotten a single piece of e-spam from them), you can save your color palates.
I agree. Behr does have a great color site. It's hard to get the exact shades contrasted properly, but at least you get a good idea of what works and what doesn't.
