Even though it's been done before (a lot) while in Dublin, we HAD to photograph the amazing doors. This one reminded us of #12 Grimmauld Place.
The Dublin Doors all front on classical Georgian townhouses, with bright white pillars on either side. Although there seems to be a very wide range of colors at first, we found the range narrow, with rich, relatively primary colors in front and red a big favorite. What's yours? We came to like black a great deal. Go below for all of them...
To All Color Chips

Incredible color, but even more interesting to me is the patina, wear and tear and its toll on the color. Great colors, especially the rich blood claret on the opening door pic.
Red is considered the traditional colour for a Georgian door. My parents live in a listed Georgian about 30 miles from Shannon airport and anytime my mom discusses changing the colour she has a riot on her hand. I live in Dublin 8 (right beside Angry Design creators of the Celebrity Scale which you featured last year) and there are some great Georgian doorways on my street.
Hope you didn't get too wet on your vacation...this is the wettest summer on record in Ireland. Which given how wet it normally is is really saying something.
I ADORE the purple one in the very last pic. Too bad my neighborhood association won't allow me to paint my townhouse door that color. We have to stick to "Williamsburg" colors, so while a super deep burgundy/eggplant might squeek by, I doubt that vibrant shade would :-(
Lookie what I just found: http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?aid=856633845&item=127879&GCID=C15100x056
If I can't paint my door purple or live in Dublin, this poster will certainly look cute, cute cute in my kitchen!
I like the blue doors best.
Awww, my parents got married behind door # 3 above.
I absolutely love the bright Chinese red ones!!! Jazzy!!
Monica that's a great poster! Wettest summer ever recorded here in england too, boo!
The fanlights are fantastic - it's such a pity so many of them have been replaced with plain glass :-(
oh and I forgot to say - I like the dark Harrods green or black for these types of doors the best.
fun fact: see the decorative window above the doors? before they had street numbers, each of those decorations on a street would be unique. So when they wrote a correspondence to someone who would be visiting, they would draw an image of what their window above their door looked like so the visitor would be able to find their home.
... they're called fanlights (quite appropriately really!).
seriously? all those great colors & you like black? i like the "silks" one.
i think this is such a great irish tradition. since sometimes the homes can look so alike, they painted the doors crazy colors so when the man came home from the pub, he'd go to the right door.
I was surprised in Ireland that even modern, ordinary bungalows from the 60s and 70s often have stylized white pillars and Georgian-inspired ornaments on them (not always gorgeous ones however). The tradition seems to have lasted for a long time in domestic architecture.
Lovely city, great museums too.
Living in Dublin, my favourite Georgian doors are bright yellow or kelly green ones. Black can look really chic too and I know of a couple of doors that are painted white with Chanel-style black trim, which also look great. Our own door is painted bright red, which I've been informed is "a bit British" so I may paint it a different colour some day! As for stories that the fanlights were once used in place of door numbers, and the doors are painted different colours to help drunken men recognise their own house - please take these with a pinch of salt.
The last one is the color of my entire house.
Makes it easy to give directions.
I like the subdued orange door. Wow. sincerely, mary
