If only we had this photo for inspiration when we were planning out our living room! Love the violet and red jewel tones of the chairs and ottoman with the pristine whites and soft grey walls! And the light mossy green Bertoia bird chair offers just the right amount of surprise to this combination. Hmmm....maybe we should paint our living room walls a soft grey...and swap the moulding into something more special...Well, maybe after we finish painting the house and re-caulking the tub. Sigh.

Love this room - I also have a pair of the Saarinen armchairs and they're some of the most comfortable dining chairs I've ever sat in.
What a pleasant room!
This is very much like my living room! Well, the color scheme (jewels and grey) at least... I have a vintage velvet emerald green sofa and armchair, another vintage velvet armchair in a lighter shade of green, and accents of grey, white, butter-cream and a touch of peach through out the room. The furniture style is a mix of many eras and feels light and fresh at the same time. High ceilings, crown-molding and large windows certainly help ensure this..
Though my floor is not as nice... herringbone parquett lies underneath the current flooring and as soon as my building goes co-op i'm unearthing them in all of their glory!

Living Etc. is a great source for inspiration. The rooms featured tend to be smaller scale, contemporary, casual, and soothing (without being boring). I wish the US shelter magazines would follow their lead. My only complaint: it's only available as a pricey UK import magazine.
Beautiful floors..but I don't think my hair color (brunette) would go well with these colors.
Once I move my livingroom will be light grey walls (if the landlord lets me paint) a taupe couch, and a taupe/grey rug along with some walnut pieces and a few pops of red. I've always loved neutrals as a backdrop and I can't wait until I get to really go wild!! - Sept. 1 baby!

sdnyc: I have to disagree. I think the cool and reserved white and gray is a wonderful contrast to the warm wood floor. I also don't think the vertical drama of the curtains wold work otherwise (they would totally dominate everything else).
I love the use of the iconic modern furniture pieces here. It looks natural and doesn't have a hint of name-dropping. The stack of magazines on the floor lends a lived-in feeling without looking like clutter.
I've never liked the thick shag carpets (nightmare to clean, and they look like they are designed to conceal mess) but I think that's more my issue. :-)
It would be interesting to see what artwork was chosen for behind the sofa.
My office at work has pale gray walls, with jewel tone paintings and cherry wood furniture. I've come to like it a lot more than my apartment colors (browns, beige, sage green)
