I need a cure. A cold cure. Between the shorter days, the colder nights, and the germ factories that are my two toddlers (is it possible to overdose on honey and echinacea?) my typical sunny disposition is starting to darken. So I've been thinking: what if I woke up every day enveloped by the brightness of a home that looks as radiant (and feels as luminous) as our beloved brightest star? When done right, yellow feels cheerful, upbeat, fresh, and crisp. (Who doesn't want to feel fresh and crisp when the alarm jolts you awake in the pitchest of black?) I love the way that these rooms celebrate the enthusiasm of yellow, but keep the look modern and fresh by balancing it with a fresh white.
Each morning we awaken to the sun and to the brilliance of a new day. A day that is full of possibility, opportunity, and mystery. Each night we return home to darkness, to a time of turning in, and to surrendering towards sleep. In the book Beauty by John O'Donohue, he writes, "Awakening and surrender: they frame each day and each life; between them is the journey where anything can happen, the beauty and the frailty."
I love the idea of waking up to a shining yellow that calls me to jump up, to climb out of my dark cocoon, and to start the journey. The journey where anything can happen. Maybe a new job. Maybe a new friend, a new challenge, or a life-changing new idea. Maybe, even, a cure for the cold.
