The current issue of Design New England features the colorful West Roxbury, Massachusetts home of interior designer Rachel Reider whose signature "soft modern" style effortlessly blends the past with the present in bold, unexpected ways.
To achieve her goal of creating a casual fun environment Reider "intermixed lush elements such as silk drapes, mother of pearl light fixtures, and jewel-toned paint with quirky objects like a zebra-print chair, patterned throw pillows, and hollow drum stools in orange leather." The overall effect is at once sophisticated and comfortable, tailored and inviting. You'd never know that Reider and her husband completed most of the budget-friendly renovation themselves — while expecting their first child!
We love the way Reider's dramatic color palette and eclectic pieces like the traditional ottoman covered in snakeskin leather pay homage to the home's Victorian roots without taking itself too seriously. In a neighborhood known for its continuity of character, we think that's a good thing.
