Q: I just moved in to an apartment where the rooms were painted in childish pastel colors: baby blue, baby pink, lavender. The room we designated as the dining room is pink. It's approximately 11x11 and is generally dim during the day time. With my current dining set, I am struggling to find a suitable paint color as I really don't want to go with white or beige.
I also have no idea what to look for in a rug. Should I get a striped rug or a plain rug? Should the colors in the rug match the chairs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would pull out one of the gray colors from your chair. That would really warm up the room. Good luck!
Also, I would wait on the rug until after you paint. You may realize that you dont even need it.
I'd grab the <what looks like> blue in the chair fabric, or something close to it. My first inclination, though, would be brown/harvest gold color wheeling around in the mix, but you would definitely need a rug with that lovely wood floor. Go blue<ish>, no such issues!
There's a lot of great colors to pull from the chairs fabrics. I'd go with either the camel or rust colors myself. As for the rug, for a dining area I'd suggest either no rug, or a simple natural fiber type.
Fun chairs. I'd go with a dark rug - maybe the grey, grey/blue, warm brown. I love FLOR carpet tiles, 'coz you can do almost anything you want (but if those wood floors have varnish, I don't think FLOR tiles will work). I'd go for a color that looks great w/the wood floor. There's a MS color at Home Depot called "Fledgling." It might look great.
grey! or turquois. (depends on what you prefer) I would also second harvest something. go bold on the wall!
I would also say the table doesn't fit to the chairs unless you were trying to go for drab... loose the table, get a lighter one (or darker)
not a fan of rugs in dining areas.
I would pull a grey or blue from the chairs, but any color from the fabric would look good on the wall.
Personally I do not like mixing patterns, so I would do a plain rug. Agree with the other comment that said wait to buy the rug until after you paint. Wall color may change your view of the room.
Do you have to paint the walls back when you move out? If that is an issue maybe show your landlord the wall color you pick before painting, hopefully they dig it and you wouldn't have to paint twice while you're there.
Ditto grey! I'd go a light grey and it would look great!
either grey or rust - go to a darker shade than you'd first assume. It will be warmer, more inviting.
A dark, warm grey (with more red than blue in it) would look good. As for an area rug, cream looks great with grey.
I agree with makedesign. A darker shade will make the baseboard and white curtains pop!
FWIW, pastels can look nice if the trim is painted black instead of white. That's no help in a room where the paint clashes with your chair fabric, but could save you some elbow grease elsewhere in the house.
I would paint the walls light grey or light yellow. As for rugs, almost every rug at West Elm right now would go with that set. I think I'd be inclined toward the muted color version of this one: http://www.westelm.com/products/lourdes-sanchez-bulls-eye-rug-r968/?pkey=crugs-flooring
We just painted our Library a Benjamin Moore color called Sundial, and it might look good with your chairs. It's a light golden yellow, not as "baby yellow" as some other pastels, but light and warm. Looks nice in all sorts of light, and we used a lot of creamy white (Cameo and Sugar Cookie) for trim, which you could do too.
Another sunny neutral but not yellow, beige or gold color is 7977, which is a Benjamin Moore paint made for Janovic, but probably avaiable anywhere.
If it's dim, why don't you try to improve the lighting? A shelf or sideboard with a lamp on it? That might go a long way to brightening up the room, along with a new paint color. (Not gray)
Yellow or orange! The colors in your chairs are nice, but won't brighten up a room if you're after color. A nice bright contrasting color that still matches would be great.
