We've long loved a brightly-colored front door. Or even boldly-colorful interior doors. Here's another idea that's related to these, but doesn't involve the door iteself:
Paint a door frame in a standout color. In an open doorway, it'll make you feel like you're really passing through an important threshold. Take the pictured example, for instance. In an otherwise neutral room, this door frame stands out and just beckons you to pass through.
What do you think?

I like the idea, but I'm not crazy about that particular execution :D
I wish I could see more examples....I've been thinking about doing this in my apartment.
I've been thinking about doing this on the interior of my window casings but I've had a hard time finding examples...this helps me to think it could work, in the right color..
Please stop with the thumbnails that don't expand, AT. What I see is a jumble of black and white and an itty bitty line of pink.
Amen Suzee!!!
I did this in a house I used to live in and it looked great, it was a real pop of colour (we also had deep windowsills which we painted the same colour as the doorframe in each room).
On the tiny landing, which was one door wide by two doors long there was only one (door wide) piece of wall to decorate, so we painted each door frame a different colour. Not only did it look great it actually made the landing look bigger too.
It gives a bit of the feeling of some tropical island homes. My husband wanted to do the same thing in our foyer in bright blue.
I painted my door frames and window frame chocolate brown. They'd been covered with primer white year after year between tenants, but when I painted the walls tan and red, I couldn't have primer white frames and was tired of having frames that just blended into the walls... They make me happy.
I'd like to do something similar (in aqua), but will it look weird if the rest of the trim doesn't match?
I'm working on it in my bathroom. My creative conscience is says "Go with it man" but the regular old Joe in me is flipping out.
I must admit, it makes the room pop with the right lighting. I think i'll stick with it.
Its a good conversation piece.
I’d done this 12 years ago when I had a Mediterranean inspired living room. I painted them glossy yellow against the crisp white walls and blue seating area.
I saw this post, was inspired, and tried it in my apt today to spruce up a boring room. It looks awful :(
