Funny how times change. Two weeks ago I was watching the news as New York residents were being evacuated because of Hurricane Irene and was glad to be in Los Angeles. Now this week I wish I was in New York to attend Fashion's Night Out.
In the spirit of the festivities, I bought myself a new mustard dress (the dress in the bottom right corner of the main image above). As we all know fashion and interior design go hand in hand. My latest color craze in both is mustard.

Mustard is an interesting color choice for interiors. It can be translated many different ways. Mustard can read more yellow and can serve as the pop of color for the room or it can be more subdued and blend in with the neutrals in the space. The darker shades of mustard can help to accomplish a more masculine aesthetic. As the fall season approaches, mustard is a great color to incorporate into your home.

Let's talk about the color mustard in fashion. Before I purchased my mustard dress I took into consideration the color of my skin and how I would accessorize the dress. The color can be very close to certain skin tones, so it may not work for everyone. Because it can be viewed as a neutral color, I like to accessorize it with bright colors - I am going to purchase a bright blue blazer to wear over the mustard dress.

Do you use the color mustard in your home?

In my last fairly open concept home, every room was painted a color from one color strip, from a pale gold (bedroom) to dark mustard (library). When standing in one room and looking into others, it was hard to tell whether the lighter and darker golds were due to lighting or if the paint really was different. The entire house read as neutral, including the mustard colored silk drapes on the 14 foot high windows.
I LOVED it, and so did the people who bought the home.
I'm at the beach now. Less gold, more sand :)
Another reason to be in New York? I got that Theory dress at their Spring sample sale for ridiculously cheap!
I have been looking for a king sized mustard colored quilt forever... Duvets, I can find, but a quilt? not so much. It goes lovely with my grey and cream bedroom... the search goes on.
I just recently got a mustard colored quilt and shams from West Elm (the bubbles quilt, I think it's sold out now). I LOVE it. I also have a bright mustard colored purse. And I've been searching for the perfect mustard colored cardigan sweater for over a year. I'm obsessed.
I am not a fan of mustard... since my husband and I both have yellower undertones, it makes us look really sick. I could probably make darker mustard work as accents in my home, and I have been on the hunt for mustard yellow shoes for years.
... And my mom uses yellow/orange/mustard everywhere. So I might just be mustard-out from seeing so much growing up.
We have mustard as an accent around the house. I love how it bridges the gap between bright colours and earth tones, something we ping-pong back and forth on from spring to autumn:

ditto, electrickatie. i look so sick with mustard on.
I've loved that silk upholstered bed for years, but could never find the original source (I probably have that issue of Living Etc. it comes from too -- March '08).
Anybody know where to find it?
I love posts like this one! Fashion and interior design are so related it just makes sense.
Mustard looks really good with eggplant.
I prefer a golden yellow that is brighter and more orange than mustard, which I also use at home. They seem similar if you see them separately, but when seen together, the mustard looks greenish. That may be why some people wearing mustard look sickly.
I wear that mustard color so much my friends have started calling it "Whitney yellow". The thing about that shade is that it's all bright and happy but not sickeningly if that makes any sense....
I love mustard, and have pops of it in our home. My favorite painting is a mix of mustard, teals, greens and is so moving. I tend to design our whole loft around that painting. The mustard gets picked up in pieces all over our space, and I love it!
I, too, agree with electrickatie that mustard doesn't look flattering on me. I prefer a soft pastel yellow; not only for wearing but also for decorating.
