Q: We just finished furnishing our small NYC living room and ended up with a lot of dark grey (we tried to avoid light colored sofa/rug with a one-year-old). I really love the idea of some feminine, colorful end tables for each side of the couch. I fell for this GiGi nightstand (shown) from Urban Outfitters but they are on backorder until March and I can't wait that long!!! Any suggestions for something similar?

It's pretty easy to find tables like this at thrift stores. Pick up a cheap one and paint it yourself. For something this small you could probably even get away with using a tester size of the paint you choose. (They're only $3.) Easy, instant gratification and probably way cheaper than buying from a company. Plus, your tables will be one-of-a-kind!
I would go to flea markets or antique stores to find something similar and paint it that color. You may find something even better.
You can spray paint a flea market find with Montana artist spray paint- they come in lots of colors, have excellent opacity and coverage, with a fool-proof matte finish that's a god send for around $8.
For something with similar proportions, you can paint an ikea edland. Costs nearly half as much as the UO nightstand (before painting, anyway) so it could be worth it. I also find the yellow trollsta kind of appealing, but the color and the proportions and lack of closed storage space are all pretty off.
Order the light gray one and paint it to your liking:

sorry about the long url
I agree with shopping flea markets and thrift stores and painting yourself but that takes time..so if time is an issue you're better off waiting for March and get what you want.
Here are some colorful table sources I have-

These are so fun, just put a glass top on this

If you are in New York take a look at their inventory their prices are pretty good you can get two different tables if they don't have matching pairs.

Ditto on the painting - since its small you might want to use spray paint, bit expensive for larger pieces but easier to get a nice finish if you don't have to buy too much. Check out craigslist for plenty of bargains!
On the other hand - if you absolutely love that one, March is only a few months away. Don't forget that's not so long to wait compared with the number of years I assume you'd be enjoying it for (this from the point of view of someone who had a mattress on the floor for 3 months while trying to choose a bedframe - it was worth the wait, my first instinct wouldn't have worked as well in the room as it came together)
Thrift store, garage sale or curbside find -- all the way. With just a bit of know-how, you'll end up with something of superior quality AND unique styling. The gigi table is nice, but so easily bested.
You know, it is not that easy to find end tables at thrift stores, let alone in a specific style! I have been looking for a year and I am not picky and we go at least a couple of times a month.
I say, wait. Use a box or something in the meantime. Seriously. Three months is hardly anything in the scheme of things, and sometimes backordered items come in sooner than expected. I know it's hard to wait, but in the long term you will probably be happier and if you happen to find something you like better while you are waiting, you can always get that instead.
Agree w/alahoop -- definitely order it now and it may come in earlier than expected.
You'll kick yourself if you buy something and don't love it as much as this great find -- that unfortunately wasn't readily available! Besides, it'll mean so much more when it finally does arrive.
$148+ tax and delivery for that?????
Oh Please, get thee to the local thrift shops, flea markets, Craigslist, Garage sales and vintage furniture stores and find a couple of older pieces that you can refurbish yourself similarly.
You shouldn't spend more than $25 on each table - With a $5 can of spraypaint and a new glass handle for $3 and some elbow grease you'll have much the same thing and money left over.
thanks for the advice everyone! sounds like there are two camps - the "buy it and wait" camp and the "DIY" camp. I live in NYC, don't have a car or a lot of time so the thrift store/craigslist shopping probably won't happen. I do like lepidoptery's idea to get the ikea edland and spray paint it.
Has anyone ever purchased furniture from Urban Outfitters? I'm just wondering if it will be somewhat good quality....because I know the ikea one won't be.
I'm in Park Slope and I have a very similar piece. It's actually a humidor and the two main differences are that their is a decorative ash tray on top and the front door is solid. I picked it up for a wood finishing class I took many years ago. It's in good shape. It is stripped of finish and except for a minor sanding with either steel wool or 280 sandpaper it is ready for paint. I picked it up for $30 in Saugerties but I'll let you have it for $15(I want to get rid of it.) email me at my gmail account, same handle and I can send you pictures. I only have one. If you came out and picked up the one @ IKEA it might make a nice eclectic mix.
well i think Urban Outfitters made the decision for me....the color is no longer an option online.
What about some fuschia colored end tables? Or something electric blue-ish (peacock or teal even.) The tables you are looking at have such an old grandma look to them. The green is hideous.
My oldest daughter has the one from Ikea that someone recommended, and while it is sturdy, it is very top heavy and can tip (I'd be concerned, with a one year old). Maybe the UO one would have the same problem though.
Assembly was a pain in the rear, too. I can't remember why, because we ended up having to ask my dad to do it. We've assembled other furniture from Ikea without any issues though.
If UO has the table you want, but not in the right color, why not buy those and paint them? That way you'll be able to get the table you want in exactly the color you want.
Honestly, I saw that table in the store and it's definitely not worth that kind of money. It's basically a mediocre table that's painted a cool color. And if it's the color that attracted you, painting something yourself is really the best option. And for a table that size you won't need a car to transport it.
Kate, I'm in NYC too, so I know what you mean about not having a car to go thrifting and not having a place to paint it yourself. There are, however, great vintage places in Brooklyn, NJ, and even Furnish Green in midtown Manhattan, which b77 referred you to. An end table could fit into a taxi, and everyone has some sort of delivery option. Seriously, go vintage!
Old sewing machine tables look just like this, complete with door on front. Remove sewing machine, paint and PRESTO!
There is a great, unique import shop called Nadeau that sells for wholesale prices in New York. I got a lot of colorful pieces at their Chicago location. The pieces are solid and sturdy, and come in a lot of unique and attractive colors.
This is their website:

I've never seen anything sold at Urban Outfitters that isn't absolute garbage - one more reason it's not worth $148.
Really - at least check out the Hells Kitchen Flea Market:

...and the GreenFlea Market on Columbus:

If you have access to a Zipcar, you can take a short trip out of the city to Mamaronek, where you'll find the Chatsworth Auction Rooms. It's an enormous, gigantic place crammed full of furniture, reasonably priced. I was a customer there back in the 1980s, and I was pleased to recently discover that they're still in business. I'm sure you'll find end tables galore there. And everything else! http://www.chatsworthauction.com/
Are you able to visit the store itself? I'm pretty sure I've seen them in stock at the stores, and they might even be on sale.
