It would appear that we've officially entered the icky season here in San Francisco - the rain has been coming down on and off for the past few days and doesn't seem to want to stop any time soon. We'll have to stick to our umbrella outside for now, but we can still try and incorporate a beautiful parasol inside.
Follow Alice's lead and chop off the handle to shade an overhead light. Or if you have a collection like the one pictured at top, you can again take off all the handles then hang them on the wall in a decorative group, like these plates. Any other suggestions?

I love the idea of the parasol over a light, but how would you fasten?

Somewhere on AT they posted a tutorial, although I think it was a wall mount, not as a fixture.
I would like to do something like this, but I haven't yet been able to bring myself to saw off the handle!

i've had a paper umbrella sitting in the closet for years because i can't figure out how to attach it. even if you chop off the handle, that doesn't make it any easier to attach it to the ceiling. i'm thinking it involves a lot of rigging of wires, pulleys, hooks, and such...advice?
My parasol lamp. I have two mug hooks in my ceiling supporting a wire that I got as part of a paper lantern I once bought. To get the parasol at an angle, I used zip ties and duct tape (not visible from the outside). That's a little different, of course, because I didn't put the parasol over an existing light, but rather in front of a lamp kit I added to that corner. But still, super easy (other than precariously balancing on the arm of the couch in order to get the zip ties/duct tape up there!).
What about using those hooks with a screw on the end? Screw into the cut off/shortened handle and then hang (from ceiling) where ever you put another screw hook.
