Looking for a quick way to brighten up your home without shelling out a ton of money? Want some instant decorating gratification?
As with many decor questions, pillows are the answer. I've assembled just a few of the bright, bold, colorful pillows (or cushions, as they say in the UK) available. It was tough to keep the number to 16 because there are so many to choose from!
Any of these pillows will bring new life to your neutral couch (and hide a few stains while they're at it…). And the best part is you can rotate pillows among your rooms depending on your mood or the changing season.
What are your favorite sources for fabulous pillows?

SECOND ROW
• 1 Working Wonders, $164.

$350 for a pillow? Really?
These are awesome! (but holy crap they're expensive)
great, but, i can only imagine that people who are able to afford $350 pillows typically hire out someone to do their decorating... no? AT readers are doing no such thing... i find this post to be exceptionally irrelevant.
"Looking for a quick way to brighten up your home without shelling out a ton of money?".....um, for many of us $350 per pillow is a ton of money. They certainly are pretty though!
Gosh, and I've been agonizing over whether or not I should spend $13 on a pillow I saw at Walmart. Clearly, this website is out of my league.
I don't really mind that the pillows are excessively expensive, but billing them as a way to brighten up your home without spending a lot of money is a bit ridiculous. There's been a whole lot of this lately on AT. It's not that interesting, and frankly I find myself visiting less and less.
Glad I'm not the only one gasping over a "cheap" $350 pillow. Great pillows on ETSY for much much less.
I agree with Michelleb. That these pillows are being positioned as "affordable" is ridiculous.
Right, when I think of sprucing up a room "without shelling out a lot of money" I don't think of dropping $350 or even $100 on a pillow! Throw pillows are one of the most ridiculously overpriced things in my opinion...right up there with curtains...
Point taken, everyone. Yes, some of these are very pricey. I guess I was focusing on fabulous more than affordable. Aspirational, maybe. And my comment about "not shelling out a ton of money" was more about how buying amazing pillows is cheaper than buying a new couch. Poor choice of words, clearly! My apologies. I agree that $350 is too much to spend on a pillow. I know I wouldn't. But it's nice eye candy...I think a post on colorful pillows under $100 is a great idea! Catrin
The Abfab Thomas Paul Pillows are $80 for 22" down Pillows. You can snag them on www.gilt.com for $40.
You have to watch for when they come up. It is a flash sale but I have gotten some great goods at really cheap prices for quality home deco stuff.
www.kingslane.com is also another fabulous place for stuff a low prices.
I got some groovy throws, chotchkies etc. for some major renovations I am doing for very reasonable prices.
Horchow/Neiman Narcus has great sales- I got a $150 Trina Turk pillow for $80.
The $80 was my limit for pillows.
Check out Etsy for some great original pillows by indie artists for far less. Great stuff.
I was thinking that the David Weidman pillows at Urban Outfitters were pretty cool, and for just a fraction of the price of these ones.
“without shelling out a ton of money” ... “$450 and up” ... Haha!
Who posts this stuff?... :)
... On a second thought, what else can go with a $13000 mattress other than a $350 pillow?...
Come on people, work with them... :)
I have a Cushlab cushion and it's gorgeous. The very lovely Becca makes all of her cushions by hand and the quality and finish is superb. An awful lot of work and attention to detail goes into each and every one.
What are these pillows stuffed with? gold?
Better buying a piece of fabric and making your own pillows, or buying in Etsy. For that price I rather buy a new couch.
Couldn't find any colorful pillows under $100? I'll spend $30 tops on a throw pillow. I do love the first in the 3rd row and the first 3 in the last row.
Lighten up, everyone. Even though we can't afford most of these pillows, one can dream. I like that AT has posts like this in addition to the more practical, inexpensive ones. As long as it's not ALL there is, I like seeing the decor equivalent of the designer catwalk a la Vogue. I can't afford it but i still like seeing what the upscale designers are doing...
Dad,
Good post. I agree with you. Sometimes the comments are related to jealousy.
Everything good is not nesessarily cheap.
LOL jealousy? That's funny. Isn't there an internet "law" about bringing up jealousy as a reason behind criticism? Especially when it's criticizing a site for not appealing to the vast majority of their readers?
Posts like this are why I've started to gravitate away from shelter magazines: almost everything pictured is way out of my price range--and sometimes I'm looking for specific ideas, not just inspiration.
these cushion cover and throw pillows are beautiful , the colors are truly vibrant but they are a bit expensive. Check out this site hand made silk cushions starting at $26.00

apologies for shameless self promotion!
@dad and dakini123: several of the complaints about the price of had to do with Catrin's statement that pillows would brighten up one's home without "a ton of money." I think these are legitimate complaints, and the author herself agrees in the comment section that these are legitimate.
I find quite tiresome the assumption that critiques regarding price (or size) are an expression of jealousy. AT has a niche that helps it to stand out from, say, Arch Digest. For me, one defining characteristic of AT is its commitment to using money thoughtfully--after all, isn't the $13K Hastens review an exercise in debating not the price, but the value of an expensive mattress?
How about a piece on what makes a more expensive pillow (or a more expensive anything) worth the extra money? I, for one, am willing to spend more money for a pillow with a removable, washable cover, made of a gorgeous and durable natural fabric.
Ha - I think bloggergal's comment that these were stuffed with gold was about the best one of the day :)
These are hilariously expensive pillows!
Heck, I'm going into the pillow business!!

I think it is good to look at all ranges of home goods. Why should we exclude the really expensive and perhaps better made stuff. My mother taught me to look at only the best made things to learn about quality. She also told me you get the best buys at the best stores.
There are ALL ranges of incomes and tastes that look at Apartment Therapy. We can learn from the high, low and middle.
Wow...these are ridiculously expensive! Perhaps we need more posts with realistic prices for items. Aren't we in a recession?
Oh my god oh my god oh my god!!!! those pillows are gorgeous!! and they're cheap?!?!
*scrolls down*
SQUEE! they're only fourhhhhoooooly CRAP! are you freaking kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!
Hello, I am a little scared to post a comment after the huge pillow backlash!
I am the owner/designer for Cushlab and although I can't speak for any of the other designers shown I did want to say just a little in defence. Pricing for me is always difficult, some of the fabric i use is $60+ dollars a metre, one of my cushions (not shown on this site) takes over 5 hours to make, the ones shown take about 2 hours each....profit margins are often tiny for craft makers and it is often done for the love not the cash so I appreciate the prices sometimes look mad but sometimes it is justified, it is then the customers choice whether the investment is worth it......also we live in a world where we have been feeding off the third world, getting children to make cushions for a penny a time, it is unrealistic and environmentally wrong, the honest and realistic price for things ethically made is always going to be higher than the price we have become used too....
I have cushions on my sofa that cost me $5 from ikea, I have had them for years and love them, on the same sofa I have some of mine and I love them too, especially in these days of ecconomic gloom we make choices based on what we like, what we love and what we can afford, hopefully we find a happy balance.......x
It is not the writers who alienate readers with their selections or articles. Instead, it is the aftermath of readers whizzing arrows the writers must shield out or sink in. First, readers must thoroughly read the article, not skim. And if one still feels a need to comment, take the time to peruse the comments that have come before you. Repetitious complaining and squabbling because commenter after commenter fails to recognize their irritated jab is a carbon copy of the 10 before. OR even after the author's own explanations, as in the case of Graphist.
For future comment threads, perhaps kinder comments or none at all if something presented is not to your taste or price points. For instance, a HOUSE CALL highlights a young man's first apartment which he has proudly outfitted proudly enough to make himself vulnerable on the internet with a site I would hope to be a community of ideas and inspiration, support and suggestion. If his walls are grey with brown floors with black furniture and typeface *gasp!* accessories.
Instead of comments in a row of:
"Ugh. Enough with the grey walls!"
"Typeface decoration is becoming an old trend."
"It's too dark and depressing."
"Not my taste."
^^^^^^^^^^This last one is my favorite. Why tell us? Move on. It is simply a negative jab.
Let's try "I don't care for this in my home but [if you must even begin the comment that way] I love how you've captured serenity on that beautiful ledge with the sun glowing through your plants. Beautiful lamp next to the bed too! Maybe something like a colorful book or velvet art on the table would highlight the lamp that much more."
Kudos again to Catrin for acknowledging what could be viewed as a wrongly worded. As a writer myself I continually watch for "The difference between the right word and the wrong word is like the difference between the lightening bug and the lightening." (Mark Twain's words.) And before the question arises, I have been reading AT for eons, finally logged in a few months ago, and have waited until NOW to post my own first novel-length comment. Catrin's explanation should have been enough to clear things up. Yet more comments came... they always do. Sorry Catrin, in Abe Lincoln's borrowed words: “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
But Catrin! You did ask all of us readers "What are your favorite sources for fabulous pillows?" I believe this to be in the spirit of what I feel the true community of AT to be. Some offered the example of etsy, which I too love! Others suggested Urban Outfitters. Another plugged her own site because it was relevant to the discussion/question.
My official answer:
You showcased high-higher end pillows, gorgeous, fun, 'eye candy', definite inspiration. I am digging on the top left orange one. But instead of using pure leather I think I will tackle the project with a child size bed pillow and some orange and rust shades of felt cut into shapes of rounded leaves. I also have at least 10 or 12 throw pillows I have stored because I grew bored with them. Rather than getting rid of them and buying new pillow forms, I think I am going to search out a fabric similar to the purple with white highlighted tulip-like flowers and simply slip cover my existing high quality pillows! Great post to make us think!
PS: becca.b YES! :)
I like the pillows, they are just my style. luckily I am able to design my own textile and sew my own pillow so I do not have to shell out a lot of money to spruce up my home.
Thanks, BreathingRooms.
