i remember seeing that target one in stores and really liking it until you look closely at it. it's made REALLY poorly and looks super cheap in person.

Ok, question here. I've always grown up with the idea that one ought to use place mats for everyday and a tablecloth for special occasions. But my new roommate just sets the plates right on the table for everyday meals. It's not a big deal, and if this is the worst thing we disagree on we'll be fine, but I was curious what other people did.

Buckingham Palace puts the plates right on the (highly polished) table for State Dinners - but the White House uses tablecloths.
This is just another one of those "Personal Preference" things...
Well, at least these don't have tassels hanging off the edge. *shudder*
lurker2209: I think the rules are really flexible. I use place mats and trivets on my kitchen table. Its stained oak and it shows every smudge and glass ring of condensation. I feel like table cloths are more labor intensive, unless you use something like oil cloth.
