Maybe it's the hot summer weather, maybe it's the zeitgeist, but my purple sofa and teal walls are looking tired today. Instead, I keep drooling over these dreamy color-free rooms, the very picture of cool — which is not to say cold! Shades of white, black and grey, these rooms still manage to be interestingly layered, even cozy. What do you think, could you go color-free?

Shaw's Original Fir...
Love, love, love the way these look, but I think this is the hardest 'color' scheme to achieve.
You have to have exactly the right amount of texture, contrast, and natural elements, plus I think it only works really well when the light is perfect and the volume of the space is just right.
Plus, speaking only for myself, color keeps creeping in. Even though I love the no-color look, the minute I let myself go I've bought a bright turquoise or chartreuse pillow or flowers or something.
THANK YOU for this no-color post. My living room is black, white, grey and brown. Family members keep stating I may need an accent color, and i hate the yellow/brown, blue/brown combos. This is inspiration of what i LOVE
LOVE it, too. So soothing and peaceful. But I relate to Dulcibella, that it would be a constant struggle to keep the color at bay.
Too sterile, cold, and hospitalesque for me.
You must hang out in much plusher hospitals than the rest of us...
I love this look. If we bought a new place (preferrably a big home with lots of windows and light, the opposite of our apt.), I would totally do this look.
i am loving this look as well. the more i see white painted hardwood floors , the more it appeals to me. Plus, white, black and little wood accents here and there can easily be given help of color by some gorgeous flowers, colorful dishes, maybe a few accent pillows in colors.
I think it's a good way to "open" up a small space as well.
The elegant homes in the photos are dramatic and polished, and I'd like to visit them, but wouldn't want to live in them as they are. My home's shell, window treatments, furniture, and appliances are mostly in whites, browns, and black, too, but I add bright color in accessories. To each her own!
I'm in the process of decorating my entire apartment to look like a black and white photo!!! So you know I LOVE these rooms!!
I get the sense that these rooms aren't so much well-designed well as they are well-photographed.
I agree with what some other people have said... some of these photographs are definitely beautiful, but they look more like they've been staged to make a dramatic art piece than like they're actual homes with actual residents.
Also, I LOVE color. LOVE IT. I would go completely crazy living in an entirely black & white world.
I think they're well-designed and well-photographed. The difficulty of this for me would be that the items that are not necessarily decor, but things like books, records, etc. would clash with the overall aesthetic. Plus there's always going to be *something* you like that's not color-free, and when that happens, well, there goes the room.
Nope not for me. I want to throw a yellow pillow or something into these rooms. Your asking a girl who never wears black & is always in a color & who has lots of color all throughout my house.
I have always loved this general aesthetic. I find it calming and focusing. Great for the bedroom.
I don't mind the look but I don't have the discipline. I'm too attracted to color!
I think they're depressing looking.
sterile
I'm currently converting my bedroom into neutral (mostly white & cream). I am doing this so I can easily change up some color when I desire it (accessories, pillows, etc.). The secondary color is moss/olive green right now. I'm also doing this so that my bedroom evokes more calm & tranquility. I LOVE color, but having a white bedroom will help desensitize me for a restful sleep. I couldn't do stimulating color in there. (All my other rooms are layered in color.)
No. 4 is lovely. I didn't think I could like b+w striped pillows... guess I was wrong.
I think these rooms are fantastic. I love color, but a nice, neutral bedroom or bath makes such a relaxing retreat. I ditto the sentiment that it is the most difficult style to achieve without looking too sterile, however. And what is the deal with all the dead cows that I'm seeing lately. How do you clean those things?
*SO* not for me I'm having trouble restraining myself from typing the adjectives that these images evoke...
I love the restfulness of this group of rooms but almost every one has high ceilings, great architectural detail, and expensive looking furniture. These are dream rooms not real people rooms. Number 4 does not and it looks pretty average to me.
