I'm going for the first time in May...yeah! Staying in SF though...any tips on transport there? I won't have a car.

Seattlebird, look into the SF-Alameda Ferry. Not sure how close it gets you; there may be some walking involved. AC transit is the transit system that covers Alameda. There may be a bus from the ferry to the market. Sorry I can't offer more info, but hopefully that's a good jumping off place.
