Do you miss Domino? If you are like us, the answer is "yes" followed by a "very much" maybe even with a "desperately" in there somewhere if we're feeling dramatic. Since they closed up shop we've felt the void in our monthly mag diet, but now we've just heard that one of the ex-staffers has a new project in the works...
It's called "Lonny Magazine" and the plan is to launch this Fall. Michelle Adams, former Market Editor is working on it, along with Photographer Patrick Cline.
It won't be a glossy hardcopy experience though - it is planned as an online only (pdf?) magazine according to this news item at Unbeige/Media Bistro: The magazine will publish on a bimonthly basis in a traditional print magazine format on its Web site.
When we checked out the site, we found a message that begins: In a time when shelter magazines are turning their last pages...Our mission is to reopen the doors of accessible design. By embracing an online platform we provide inspiration at the click of a finger, directly connecting our readers to their favorite products and resources.
We'll be keeping an eye on their URL - should be interesting to see what they come up with in what sounds like a bit of an old/new hybrid format.

are you serious about the name? lonny sounds like they'd specialize in wide lapels and polyester fabrics. a herb tarlek sort of magazine. but maybe that's just me.

Hmmmm. Cautious optimism, though that cover shot doesn't completely wow me. Looks... amateur... and I turn to design mags for awe-inspiring perfectionism.
The cover image looks tony or a bit country-club to me.
Hate the name, love the concept. Yes, anything that replaces Domino (of the same caliber) would be super! There's only so much of Glamour I can take.
it looks like amateur hour to me at the moment. Cheesy fonts--picture and decorating rounds out my impression.
Ew. the font is hideous, the photography framing looks like it was done with a half blind monkey, and the colours look decidedly dated, and not in a good way. I loved Domino, but am apprehensive about this, if this teaser is anything to go by...
And lattice on an interior wall?? Really?? I don't get it.
I'm going to go out on a limb to say 'Lon' is for London and 'ny' New York? With the text structure chosen, it sure looks that way! (maybe a precursor to the decorating influences to be found?)
I'd like to say that I remain super optimistic about the launch! I LOVED Domino and based my blog: PepperDesignBlog.com off of the fabulous magazine after it folded.
I hope (even though I won't be able to dog ear and store a hard copy magazine for years to come) Lonny is as inspiring and fantastic as Domino was! Thanks for sharing!
LOVE the idea-- but please note lonny peeps, it looks like you need a good art director/ photoshop whiz on your team. i loved domino's irreverence but the colors on the cover are all wrong, and the font--egads!

Yes, I sure miss my Domino. I even renewed in December - their last issue was March (Conde'-Nast kept sending me renewal notices through February!). In it's place, they're sending Architectural Digest. Poor substitute for Domino. I notice at my local supermarket that they are still selling the March edition of Domino.
I think Conde'-Nast knew long before December that they wouldn't be publishing the magazine - talk about a 'bait and switch' sales technique....

Nylon magazine already used the play on New York/London in the origin of its name. Lonny just basically took the same idea (whether they were aware of it or not) and reversed the syllables.
Horrible logo/typography as well.
Hopefully the inside content can redeem the ugly cover.

I think there is an online magazine that does something similar. It's called NEET. Pinklovesbrown posted it on her site, Making it Lovely, as she was featured in it. When I went to the site, it lets you flip through the pages just like a magazine. It wasn't pdf. I think it's great that they're giving this a try.
Yeah, I don't think I would buy anything with a baby on the cover. Conde Nast tried to swap Lucky for my Domino subscription and I changed it to Architectural Digest, which I now just put straight in recycling.
I hope that the cover we see here has been somehow leaked from the joke pile.... it is a joke, isn't it?

and I would never think of opening that magazine if I saw it at a store b/c I'm not a mom, and it looks like a magazine for moms.
Sydney: Too funny I was thinking the exact same thing! When I see screaming babies on a cover of a magazine, I automatically look for something else to read.
I hate the idea of an online-only magazine. There is something about the glossy magazine coming in the mail and flipping through those pages that I really enjoy.
Sydney/Suzy8Track: It may actually be a laughing/smiling baby that, unfortunately, looks like the screaming variety. Ditto on all the comments, though.

I think this is one case in which you CAN judge a book by its cover. If the cover is not designed well, why would anyone pick it up and read and then ultimately follow the design advice. Common sense.
And in that case, no, the negative comments AREN'T tough. If this were a parenting magazine, perhaps they would be, but for a design mag ... the cover is its own resumé (or audition).
In addition to the ugly decor and poor choices of type styles, the composition and tangents are killing me.
to do a printed magazine,they'd need a publisher with an established distrubition operation. clearly this is a way to pursue the vision without the burden of the in-house numbers game. why write a blog when you could freelance under someone else's direction? freedom. convenience.
Wow, their title layout is horrible... I'm impressed that we all seem to have had the same first reaction.
I went to their site to look at the magazine viewer, and the second page has a welcome message written in a typewriter font that is completely illegible without zooming in. Sure, the zoom function works fine, but they could so easily have chosen a different size or font that would be visible at the default zoom.
Ditto pretty much every comment here. as the weather here starts to cool down I especially miss Domino. It was a nice thing to look forward to each month, I'd make tea, cuddle up in bed, and read it cover to cover.

On the mag. racks in stores I would never look at anything with a baby on it, they're invisible to me.
I don't think any of this is harsh.
They need to promote to their potential readers, if the baby turns off several people they should ditch the screaming infant.

sorry, i LOVE magazines, and love design, but as a graphic designer this is very sub-par...bizarre name, horrid fonts, average photography and if it's for the purpose of selling design, this isn't the way to do it...

I have a need to browse through ink and paper. BTW, I was horrified to receive "Cookie" magazine from Conde Nast as a replacement for my Domino subscription; the cover was crawling w/children. First, they oddly assume that Cookie is a suitable replacement for a design mag, and inexplicably think that everyone fits into the Cookie demographic.
...oh, and I love children; am the proud parent of a lovely child, even.
Wow, this debut issue is amazing, and I'm really looking forward to see what's next for Lonny. I just noticed that page 26 features my studio's Midwest Seed Bombs, which are available at Jayson Home and Garden in Chicago [as mentioned in Lonny], and also in our own Etsy shop.
I am COMPLETELY impressed with the first issue! I must be living under a rock, because last night was the first time I'd even *heard* about it. Then I could not stop "paging" through it ... even made me (and my family) late for dinner with my parents!! I've blogged about it, twittered about it ... I'm beyond thrilled. The layout is very user friendly - with the scrolling/preview option at the bottom.
I'm trying to get beyond being stuck on the entire "ink and paper" / "hold in my lap while sipping coffee" thing ... trying to remember that this format is much more environmentally friendly. And really, I'm just so, so happy to have something to fill the void that was left when Domino was shuttered.
(btw, *totally* agree with muirwoods08 on the "Cookie" replacement for Domino... not even a close match.)
So far (one issue is not a lot to go by), I like it, but it feels more like MetHome or House Beautiful type of magazine than Domino, which tended to be aimed at a slightly younger demographic. It's not quite the same experience at all.
