A press release landed in our inbox yesterday that had us all abuzz with excitement. Domino, the beloved shelter magazine, is coming back ... sort of.
Condé Nast announced yesterday that they will publish a special edition of Domino entitled Quick Fixes. According to the press release:
Domino Quick Fixes will be full of Domino's best home decorating stories, focusing on easy, often inexpensive changes that make a big difference — from quick spruce-ups of dowdy furniture to more involved DIY projects like painting stairs or reorganizing a home office.
You can expect to see Domino Quick Fixes on newsstands starting in April.

Your headline made me fly up on the wings of anticipation, and the news that it's a one-off was a great thud.
Can't wait to buy it, just the same.
not even a one-off. it's a package of recycled stories we already own.
please, just put the backlist on zinio already.
Whatever it is, I'll take it!
I agree with AllieJ. One special issue, really? Domino was one of the few magazines worth printing (and purchasing). Bring the whole thing back, seriously.
My guess is they will judge the success of this issue-and then determine whether a return has merit-
In that case, I'm buying five copies.
me too, quite shamelessly, I'am going to add my own blog!!!!!!

I agree with Allie J. I'm buying 10 copies and hope the sales boost will make Conde Nast reconsider a full revival.
Cant wait to make it on the newstands....super excited ;)
It will be a sell-out based on this entry alone. I hope I'm able to get a copy myself.
Yay! I just don't understand why they got rid of the magazine all together. Couldn't they have turned it into a publication with a quarterly issue or something?
Several magazines have been reincarnated this way, and you're so excited to see the masthead back on the newsstand that you add it to your shopping basket, only realizing later that it cost you $10-15. Just to see it's full of articles and pictures you've already seen???
No thanks!
Bring the magazine back proper!!!
Just be prepared for it to have an outrageous pricetag, as these types of publications often do. I'm guessing $9.99.
While I liked that magazine, I thought Martha's BLUEPRINT was much better. NOW there is nothing like either on the market...So I can't see why one or the other wouldnt be a sucess for a magazine company. Just print fewer..more demand right? Wishful thinking.
I got really excited about this magazine coming back when I read that headline.
Although I'm disappointed I would still buy the one time edition.
@JENNAFURA I loved Martha Stewart's Blueprint also. I keep hoping she brings it back. Domino and Blueprint were my two favorites.
It's going to be on newstands on April 17th!

I agree with everyone above!!! Why just one edition. Bring back the monthy edition!!!! Please!
turning domino into a quarterly mag would not have been cost effective. the problem was the loss of ad revenue. the business model could not support a staff while only turning out a book every three months. they would need to be working on another magazine most of the time. bhg does all those quarterlies and one-offs by pulling the material from their regular publications. the same staff is doing them.
this is a cash-grab. domino without needleman, or any of her chiefs, would be a totally different magazine. and she has a job.
How fun! Looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
Looks like Rucy and I were commenting at essentially the same time, and his/her post just beat mine out ... hadn't seen it while I was composing mine. Anyway, same point. But worth repeating!
I wonder if this one edition will be available online for purchase? I live overseas, so going to a local shop to grab a copy just isn't possible for me. Maybe one of you guys buying multiple copies could hook me up... PLEASE!!!
I'd take a quarterly of new content - come on Conde Nast!~
Also stop sending me stuff to renew lucky when I have 3 years of credit b/c you cancelled Domino and OhDeeDoh... oh wait I mean CookieMag...
Considering my Domino mags are in a box somewhere in my parents' garage (and I live 600 miles away) I welcome Domino any way I can get it.
I wonder why they don't do bring it back as a digital magazine like Lonny.
Oh how I still miss Domino and Cookie after all these years.
I liked Domino and I'm happy to see that they're reviving it for a one-off, but what I *really* want to see is Blueprint for the iPad. C'mon, MSLO- make it happen!
what happened to Lucky Home? I thought that was on the way this year too.
I too wish Domino would revive itself as a digital magazine or at least a mobile app.
Okay. I guess that's good. I hope it's for like a test market to see if they will bring it back. Just read also that there will be a second edition released in Fall of 2012 as well.
I completely agree with Lady J. This is just like Conde Nast -- they have done the same thing with old Gourmet content, recycled articles published as if the content is new. Sure they own the creative content but loyal supporters of the original magazines and staff shouldn't be fooled.
BRING DOMINO BACK! MAGAZINE VERSION! PLEASE!!!
Since I live in France, I also wished they'd do an online edition... It cost 10 euros to buy one of those magazines here (around 13 dollars I think), and since I keep them, I have to find new shelter space all the time.
I discovered Domino only a year before it collapsed, so I'll try to get my hand on a copy anyway. And I agree that without the original staff, it wouldn't be the same. I doubt Needleman would quit her current job.
I never understood why Domino was shut down in the first place, except that most shelter magazines went into a dry spell shortly enter the economy collapsed. And there were a few I wouldn't have missed, but Domino was not one of them. Domino was like a breath of fresh air compared to the Des Moines centered universe where most mags were. Er, but I didn't like the Kelly Wearstler issue. Just because you *can* mix a bazillion prints, stripes, and chevrons in various shades of tan, black and white, doesn't mean you *should*. It's like vertical blinds. Its very hard to pull them off and make it look classy. {{shudder}}. Like some of her other stuff. Too bad it didn't make it into that issue of Domino.
Anyway, I still have my old Dominos somewhere. I will never throw them away. Not sure I will be buying the Quick Fixes unless there is new material. If I were Conde Nast, I'd try to relaunch.
In the meantime, I have AT and I am quite happy.
Would LOVE to see Domino back. There's nothing out there to replace it. Like other readers said, Blueprint was good, too. Hopefully this probably-no-new-content one-time issue is just a test for plans to actually bring the mag back!
domino : design nerds : : firefly : sci-fi nerds ...?
Yay! Hopefully they will mix in some new content too. I second a digital version including access to all of the back issues :) Conde Nast, are you reading this?!? Domino fans have spoken!
Those of you who enjoyed Blueprint - and realized too late that it went out of business - if you call the MSLO customer service number, you can order an ENTIRE set of Blueprint back issues for a very reasonable price. I did this about 2 months ago and now have a whole set of Blueprint of my very own.
I'd be interested in buying past issue Dominos. They're hard to find on Amazon. Digital editions would work too...
I agree with PARNASSUS. Why another dead tree version of Domino? An online version like Lonny would be just the ticket.
there is a world of difference btw online and print. but i'll take what i can get.
Wow. I guess I need to list my Domino mags on ebay or something. I never knew there was this level of fandom---my Mom bought me a gift subscription so they just started showing up in the mailbox. I liked looking at them at the time but do not love love them. Didn't recycle them, just shelved them next to the Design New Englands......hmmm.
wonder what they're worth.....
Wow. Deschanel's home is more masculine than I'd have expected. That's kinda cool.
I already have every issue printed save.Bring the whole thing back. What are we left with Elle Decor,BORING.Come on we are waiting!!!!!!!!
The problem with keeping magazines going these days is ad revenue, as someone said earlier. And every single one of us who read this blog (along with the hundreds of other shelter blogs) is part of the reason why Domino doesn't exist anymore. Companies no longer want to buy ad space in magazines, they want to buy advertising online, and if you have no advertising you have no magazine. Each magazine has a ratio of ads/content that they stick with every month. If they lose ad space then they lose content. Quit looking for your content online and instead buy actual MAGAZINES - that will keep them all around a lot longer.
Unfortunately, it's too late for Domino and Blueprint. But unless we prove to advertisers that magazines aren't dying on the vine, the problem is going to continue. I wonder what all these digital editions are doing for magazines too?? I'm a subscriber to about 5 different titles - but on my NookColor. I'd be curious to see what advertisers think of digital magazine editions.....are they as "legit" to them as the old-fashioned print versions??
We miss them....
